Narrative Concept :
"Ra Obah Ra Mamah" is an enduring Javanese life philosophy, passed down from antiquity and still held firmly by many Javanese communities today.
Literally translated as “without movement, there is no sustenance,” it conveys a deeper message: without change, one’s life cannot progress.
Conceptual Elaboration :
In this work, “change” refers to both self-development and the capacity to adapt to one’s environment and era—an essential effort to endure, to improve one’s life, and to evolve without losing one’s sense of identity.
It speaks to the ability to inhabit different places and times while remaining rooted in one’s cultural origins and personal character.
A parallel notion appears in Western thought through the phrase “adapt to survive.”
To embody this universal life wisdom, I employ the figure of the chameleon—an animal renowned for its remarkable mimicry, a survival strategy that allows it to blend into its surroundings and evade predators, all while maintaining its true, unaltered form. Surrounding it, the circular distortion enveloping the chameleon serves as a symbol of boundlessness and continuity.
Together, these symbols—the chameleon as an adaptive entity and the circle as a sign of infinity—express the idea that the cycle of adaptation, when carried out without abandoning one’s identity, is a perpetual process in human life.
It is a cycle lived by those who strive not only to survive, but to grow.
