The Evolution of Active Guitar Pickups and Preamps, 1963-2026 Active guitar electronics transformed pickup design by introducing powered circuits for buffering, amplification, equalization and impedance matching. Their development spans six decades, from onboard preamps to modern Multi-Voice pickups. 1963 - Burns TR2 The British Burns TR2, produced during 1963-1964, incorporated a transistorized onboard preamplifier. Its two-pickup, semi-solid construction demonstrated how powered electronics could provide additional gain and tonal control. 1969 - Alembic Ron Wickersham began developing low-impedance pickups and onboard preamplifiers at Alembic in California. The company initially concentrated on electronics before producing complete instruments in 1972. Later Series I guitars and basses incorporated active filtering and preamplification. 1973 - Bartolini William (Bill) and Patricia Bartolini established their pickup business, developing magnetic pickups and electronics for guitars and basses. In 1977, Bartolini introduced the EVQ, a preamplified pickup incorporating bandpass filtering and adjustable tonal enhancement. 1976 - EMG Origins Rob Turner established Dirtywork Studios, EMG’s predecessor. His designs combined magnetic pickups with internal preamplifiers, producing low-impedance outputs and reducing cable loading. During the early 1980s, EMG 81 and 85 active humbuckers became prominent. Their electronics provided controlled frequency response and consistent output. Steinberger incorporated EMG pickups into its headless GL instruments, helping establish active electronics as factory equipment. 2007-2008 - Seymour Duncan Blackouts Seymour Duncan introduced its Blackouts active humbuckers during 2007, expanding availability in 2008. The AHB-1 offered an alternative integrated active pickup design. 2014 - Fishman Fluence Fishman introduced Fluence pickups using layered printed-coil technology instead of conventional round-wire coils. Powered electronics provide selectable frequency responses, allowing multiple distinct voicings within one pickup. During the 2020s, active systems expanded through artist-specific designs, additional switching and rechargeable power options. Three Electronic Architectures Passive pickup - Magnetic coils connect through passive volume and tone controls. Pickup inductance, cable capacitance and amplifier input impedance influence frequency response. No power required. Passive pickup with active preamp - Conventional pickups feed powered buffering, gain or EQ circuits. This reduces cable-loading effects while retaining passive pickup construction. Integrated active pickup - Magnetic sensing elements and powered electronics form one assembly. EMG, Blackouts and Fluence represent different implementations. Technical Considerations Active does not necessarily mean higher output. Many designs prioritize low impedance, controlled frequency response and reduced cable sensitivity. Most active magnetic pickups use analog circuitry rather than digital processing. Power commonly comes from a 9V battery, although requirements and rechargeable options vary. Output impedance depends on circuit design and frequency. Active buffering generally reduces cable-capacitance effects. Active pickup development represents two innovations: adding powered electronics to conventional pickups and integrating magnetic sensing with signal conditioning. From Burns and Alembic through Bartolini, EMG, Blackouts and Fluence, these technologies expanded guitar electronics without replacing traditional passive designs. Pickup Magnet Aging and Demagnetization, 1930s-2026 Do vintage guitar pickups lose magnetic strength with age? Yes, but magnets do not weaken at a predictable annual rate. Permanent magnets can retain most of their magnetization for decades. Losses depend on material, temperature, external magnetic fields, mechanical stress, geometry and initial magnetization. How Pickup Magnets Work Electromagnetic pickups establish magnetic fields around ferromagnetic strings. String vibration changes magnetic flux through the coil, generating voltage according to Faraday’s law: V = -N(dΦ/dt) N = coil turns, Φ = magnetic flux, t = time. Traditional Fender single-coils commonly use six AlNiCo rod magnets. Gibson PAF-style humbuckers employ an AlNiCo bar beneath steel pole pieces. Reduced magnetization can lower output and alter magnetic string pull without directly changing winding count or DC resistance. Causes of Demagnetization Heat - Elevated temperatures can cause reversible or irreversible magnetic losses. External fields - Strong opposing magnetic fields can partially demagnetize pickups or reverse polarity. Mechanical shock - Severe impacts can disturb magnetization, particularly in low-coercivity materials. Initial charge - Factory magnetization varies. Identical pickups may have different magnetic strengths when new. Corrosion - Material deterioration can affect magnetic properties, particularly in unprotected rare-earth magnets. Relaxation - Small magnetic changes can occur over time, without a universal annual loss rate. Magnet Materials and Stability AlNiCo 2 - Low coercivity, relatively susceptible to demagnetization. AlNiCo 3 - Common in vintage Fender designs; stability depends on geometry and operating conditions. AlNiCo 5 - Widely used in Fender single-coils and Gibson humbuckers, with greater magnetic energy density than grades 2 and 3. AlNiCo 8 - Higher coercivity than several traditional AlNiCo grades. Ceramic ferrite - High coercivity and strong demagnetization resistance. Samarium-cobalt - High coercivity, high energy density and good temperature stability. Neodymium - Very high energy density and coercivity; temperature resistance varies by grade. Measuring Vintage Pickups A gaussmeter measures magnetic flux density at a specified location. Accurate comparisons require consistent probe orientation, distance and pole-piece position. Readings vary substantially between pickup designs. No universal gauss value establishes whether a vintage pickup has weakened. DC resistance helps evaluate coil continuity but does not measure magnetic strength. Vintage Pickup Diagnostics Record model, age, pickup height, magnet type and polarity. Measure DC resistance and inspect connections. Measure each pole using a calibrated gaussmeter. Compare with documented originals under identical conditions. Avoid unnecessary remagnetization of valuable vintage pickups. Important Distinctions Magnet aging differs from pickup aging. Wiring, corrosion, mechanical condition, component values and setup can change performance independently of magnetization. Claims that AlNiCo magnets lose a fixed percentage every decade are unsupported. Generalized aging curves cannot predict an individual pickup’s condition. A 1950s pickup may retain substantial original magnetization, while a newer pickup exposed to strong opposing fields may have weakened significantly. Magnet composition, coercivity, geometry and exposure history matter more than age alone. Preserving original magnetic condition and obtaining repeatable measurements are preferable to assuming weaker magnets produce better tone.
