Egypt, Eritrea, and Ethiopia may be sliding towards a war on one side of the Red Sea to another vs the Houthis. Add the risks of Somalia vs Somaliland, and the mess in Sudan and South Sudan, and the chaos in Libya,… And Pakistan now bombing Afghanistan,… And then a U.S. escalation vs Iran that could involve the whole GCC,… And then how that can conflate with an escalation of Russia-Ukraine potentially involving Europe,… And you see why I am talking ‘War and Peace’.
STATEMENT OF THE AU COMMISSION ON THE ESCALATING TENSIONS BETWEEN ETHIOPIA, ERITREA AND EGYPT The African Union Commission is closely following with concern the heightened tensions between Ethiopia, Eritrea and Egypt. The Commission calls on all three Member States to exercise maximum restraint and refrain from actions or statements that could further escalate tensions and undermine regional peace and stability. The Commission further  underscores the importance of preserving channels of communication and urges the three countries to address their differences through established diplomatic channels and peaceful dialogue, in accordance with the principles of the Constitutive Act of the African Union. The AU Commission stands ready, in consultation with the countries concerned, to support efforts towards de-escalation, dialogue and the peaceful resolution of differences. Unemployment rate ticking up to 4.6% (almost 4.7%) + ongoing QT + delayed transmission of past hikes tells me RBA is going to be careful about further tightening. We think they hike next week, but then wait and see for a while. RBA views rates as restrictive at current levels.

RaboResearch still has an August hike in our forecast, which is now an off-consensus view. Why? We’re sceptical the Iran MOU will result in a lasting deal that resolves the nuclear issue and keeps the strait open. afr.com/markets/debt-markets…

Iran’s war has flipped the switch: energy security first, economics second. But biofuels aren’t plug‑and‑play. Before breakevens, policy decides what actually works. Policy pillar #1: biofuel mandates. Mandates create demand — without them, most biofuels don’t scale. 🧵
