Sorry for the long absence from the labour twittersphere. Going to try to be a bit more present.

Now here's a very interesting idea that is unlikely to go down well with employers' representatives in @ILO
How can we stop the global race to the bottom in wages? Simple: A Global Minimum Wage My latest in @inequalityorg #ILO100 #ITUC inequality.org/research/ilo-…

Macron's speech to @ILO at #ILC2019 was the most interesting. Short thread coming up.

Macron also recognises that economic inequality in general is related to the inherent inequality of the employment relationship, which is not something you hear every day from a world leader.
1
One last thing -- Macron calls for greater coherence between the international organisations: there's no point standing here at the ILO saying we need more equality and more social protection and then cutting trade deals that make that impossible.
Macron argues that neoliberalism and the 'capitalism of accumulation' are a perversion of what the liberal market economy should be about. A new model is needed. /5
The heritage of the @ILO is both concrete social progress and the method of tripartism. /4
First thing was strong defence of tripartism -- the joint development of social & economy policy by governments, unions and employers. It's a pain in the neck (he didn't say that in so many words) but it works. /3
Big day for @ILO yesterday -- Merkel, Macron, May and Mevedev (among others) speaking at #ILC2019. No wonder the traffic in Geneva was a bit messed up

Replying to @CyrilRamaphosa
@CyrilRamaphosa up next at #ILC2019. Ramaphosa is one of ILO's most important international allies and was co-chair of the Global Commission on the Future of Work so will be interesting to hear whether he has anything to say beyond the usual friendly words

@CyrilRamaphosa echoes both Norway PM's call for a strengthening of the multilateral rules-based order and Ghana President's call for reform of @ILO's own governance structures
1
Call for unity within the @ILO may be a coded reference to ongoing serious disagreement between workers' and employers' representatives on, well, just about everything...
Ramaphosa recognises that the word 'guarantee' in the universal labour guarantee is going to cause a lot of employers a major problem. But he puts it down as a marker, arguing that workers and employers have made progress before and they can do it again.

calls for a 'Renewed social contract' again
