Negotiating with the Brits over Super League seems to be constantly met with another reason why something can’t be achieved. Apparently, the NRL has absolutely no understanding of rugby league in England. Yet somehow, an organisation generating almost a billion dollars in annual revenue is being told it has no idea how to run a rugby league competition. I say we let Super League show us Aussies how it’s done, because judging by the financial state of their competition, they’re clearly doing a bang up job. It would appear they want the financial investment but don’t want the NRL involved in administering, governing or having any control over how that money is spent. They seem perfectly happy to accept the money, just not the expertise, accountability or structural changes that might actually improve their competition. At some point, you have to wonder whether Super League genuinely wants to grow or simply wants someone else to fund the same problems. Perhaps the NRL should walk away and let them demonstrate just how successful their current approach really is.
