‘It’s like running a marathon… except there is no end.’
We keep hearing how our healthcare system is collapsing (which it is). But that does nothing to improve our understanding. Let’s use a hypothetical emergency department visit to highlight the disaster that is happening every day around the country. Here’s a thread 🧵:

Few months ago, I argued for a vaccine mandate for air travel Yes planes have good ventilation, which is helpful But air travel means airports, jetways, and lots of other contexts where unvaccinated, badly masked people can spread Its time for a vaccine mandate for air travel
Its time for vaccine mandate for air travel Lack of one is becoming an issue So here's my story from last night that confirmed why we need it Basically, we can't expect mitigation measures to be enforced well enough to prevent transmission on airplanes forever Short thread

If you are unvaxxed and are being told you have COVID in the emergency department, stop asking what “we” can do for you and start asking what you can do for yourself and everyone else.

So for average person If you isolate for 5 days, you are likely no longer contagious But for rare person who might still be? That’s where antigen “contagiousness” test comes in Negative antigen on top of 5 day isolation? Pretty good evidence you are no longer contagious

As Omicron cases explode We need a strategy for isolating folks who test positive We need to think about the purpose of isolation clearly Because if we don't get it right, It'll both be hugely disruptive and won't keep us safe So let's discuss what we need to do Thread

This is a deeply personal article. It is about the experience of death in the Emergency Department. I wrote it to process the memories, to honor the patients, and to open a window into what it is like for those who are not in healthcare. authors.elsevier.com/a/1e5v1…

These incredible women are the glue that hold our family together 💜
It takes a village to raise a residency, and graduation is no exception. Our @NorthwesternEM residency would not exist without our incredible program coordinators Chelsea and Claudia. We are so lucky to have them in our #NUEM family 💜💜💜
