Law Centres are fighting on two fronts: to meet people's needs and to keep operating despite adverse funding and operating conditions.
As Zelensky said in 2022, the fight is here: I need ammunition, not a ride.
Law Centres are a lifeline to people struggling with #poverty. Their services are in historically high demand, and provide great return on investment. Why does government support fall short? Discover more in this week's @lawsocgazette magazine cover story: lght.ly/k7ka80f
Well done, @hammersmithandy, and good luck in your new role!
Following an election, the Chair of the Justice Committee is @hammersmithandy

It is with a heavy heart we share the news that @HF_LawCentre solicitor, Simon Mullings, has died.
Simon embodied everything it meant to be a Law Centre lawyer. He was adored by his colleagues and his friends. His untimely death is a huge loss to us all.

"The consequences [of #LegalAid cuts] have been disastrous."
@FightBach is the Chair of @CALSfreeadvice, our new Law Centre in Leicester. Thanks, Lord Bach, and Baroness Chakrabarti, for fighting our corner in yesterday's #KingsSpeech debate on justice. (1/6) 🧵
One by one, these reports support the new government's claim that things really are worse than what they'd thought.. 😱
We completed work on 13 value for money reports during the pre-election period.
We are now publishing these reports at the earliest opportunity in the new Parliamentary session.

Oh hello! The things you find on your morning walk, in this case obscuring bits of Deptford. "It's life, Jim, but not as we know it."
So happy to see these two brilliant women recognised with honours: Dame @KarenPBuckQP, a dedicated public servant and @APPGJustice chair; and Sue Bent OBE, until recently chief exec of @CE_LawCentre and all-round inspirational leader. So richly deserved - congratulations to both!
"This behaviour by councils is almost certainly unlawful, but devastating cuts to #LegalAid mean that homeless people cannot access the legal representation they need": @HousingActionSL tells it like it is - a #justice crisis worsening a #housing crisis, widening displacement 1/2
Councils move hundreds of homeless families out of London with 24-hour ultimatums theguardian.com/society/arti…
2/2 Just how bad is the #housing #LegalAid situation? The red areas (most of England+Wales) have no local provider. When you find one, they're oversubscribed. Neglecting access to #justice lets bad practice go on hurting people in need! @SammyGecsoyler

The weakening of people's trust in the rule of law - indeed, of the rule of law itself - does not come out of nowhere. Policymakers have become too chill about creating a system allowing 'the strong do what they can and the weak suffer what they must'.
What does it mean to have world-leading’ courts if they are increasingly giving up hearing ordinary cases involving ordinary people? My law column for @TheCriticMag. thecritic.co.uk/what-price-j…
The five-year-old promise of the Renters (Reform) Bill is now broken. It was broken not today but when the gov't repeatedly watered down the Bill's renter protections. The Bill we've just lost was not the Bill we'd been promised anyway. I hope the next gov't shows more integrity!
As I was saying, before I was rudely interrupted... 🙂
🚨 New @TheLawSociety research.
Years of government neglect means that, in most of the country, people in need struggle to find local legal assistance for a housing problem. #LegalAid providers are collapsing under the burden of being underpaid.

Like it's going out of fashion: more landlords used s.21 'no fault' #eviction last year, on nearly *26,000 households*!
So much for government's pledge to scrap s.21 five years ago. Last week they baked an indefinite delay to this into #RentersReformBill

Today's #RentersReformBill debate shows just why we, and many other groups working with renters, no longer support it.
MPs' many concerns left unaddressed. Gov't pushing yet more late amendments to favour landlords. Right now, the Bill's not worthy of its name!
Law Centres help thousands of households every year to get housed, improve living conditions and protect their homes. Defending renters' rights is key to what we do. We cannot support the Renters (Reform) Bill in current form as it will fail renters. 1/2

Curious to hear @ShabanaMahmood speak on reinstating the rule of law and criticising #LegalAid changes - the cuts that made the courts much less accessible to disadvantaged people. We need to rebuild our #justice system, and civil legal aid is a necessary part of it!
Labour has slammed the Tory record on crime as the party vows to 'reinstate the rule of law' if it wins power this year buff.ly/49ON8np
