Companies that espouse the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion are increasingly fighting unionization at their workplaces. @codeforamerica is no different.

I’ve said in the past that I think the most important work in software eng/tech is building the right thing (as in, aligned to needs) but I think I’ve recently been updating that to be the need to building a (sociotechnical) system that *learns* what the right thing to build is.

@TwitterDev @TwitterSupport We recently subscribed to the Basic API tier and migrated our app (which sends alerts on behalf of transit agencies) to the v2 API. Around 5PM today, our app was suspended without notification. Can you please tell us how we can appeal the suspension?

Last year, a coworker randomly asked me to hand-deliver an antique violin across the country. I said yes, because why not. I had no idea what I was getting into, and now I need your help. A 🧵

If you haven't been reading @xriskology & @timnitGebru on the philosophy behind these AI companies, now is the time to start #TESCREAL
Spoiler: it is the opposite of #TeamHuman

The fourth reason is the most frightening: the TESCREAL ideologies are HUGELY influential among AI researchers. And since AI is shaping our world in increasingly profound ways, it follows that our world is increasingly shaped by TESCREALism! Pause on that for a moment. 😰

Hey twitter-friends! Are you an LA transit rider who uses the bus rather than the train when you have both options available? Why do you make that choice?
The annual LA Arts Datathon returns on April 27, 2023!
We'll be showcasing how the LA County government invests in the arts. Participants will have a chance to join one of three breakout sessions where they can deep dive into the maps, the data behind them, and how to use both.
This event is for everyone who cares about access to the arts, no matter your skills with using data! (I'll be running one of the breakout sessions)
RSVP here: eventbrite.com/e/arts-atlas-…
I'm super excited to announce that @theworksla and I are bringing back MaptimeLA events with a bang - we're partnering with UCLA, USC, Reitaku, and FAU to host the 6th Annual Humanitarian Mapathon (int'l edition)!
We'll give you a beginner-friendly intro to OpenStreetMap so you can start contributing to the humanitarian mapping projects over at HOTOSM.
Sign up for MaptimeLA's in-person kickoff at Metro HQ: meetup.com/maptimela/events/…
The mapathon spans 3 days but is a hybrid event so you can participate at your leisure. At the end, we'll announce winners based on a leaderboard that tracks the contributions of each team!
Details about the mapathon here: mapathon.la
I wasn't sure what kind of audience to expect at City of STEM on Saturday... Turned out to be mostly parents with young kids.
I got to nerd out about the Metro API and real-time data to a handful of peeps, and that's enough for me to call it a success. ✌️
🎉🎉🎉
Yes we have in-person maptime this April!
Everyone is welcome to attend, whether you have mapping experience or not! Just bring your laptop and we'll get you onboarded and mapping right away!
