Were ancient Egyptian statues always the bare stone we see today? 🎨🗿
Picture a museum gallery full of grey and brown sculpture. Now add painted skin, dark wigs, bright clothing and carefully outlined eyes. Many Egyptian statues originally carried colour, and surviving patches can completely change our impression of them.
This painted limestone statue of Nenkheftka is a useful reminder. The stone supplied the form; paint helped give the figure its finished appearance. Colour could also carry meaning, connecting an image with ideas about vitality, divinity or renewal.
Paint survives unevenly, so a largely bare surface today does not prove that the sculpture was designed that way. Equally, we should not imagine every statue with the same palette: materials, purposes and artistic choices varied across Egypt’s long history.
