Why did we move from PoW to PoS? Most discussions aiming to answer this question focus on energy consumption or decentralization, while we believe that PoS systems’ biggest advantage is often overlooked. In this week’s article, we discuss the answer to this question 👇

Validators now have reasons to do more than simply operate nodes. Building products, organizing events, educating communities, and contributing to their ecosystems can all help attract delegators. We have experienced this firsthand at node101.

A validator can have excellent uptime, and an RPC endpoint can respond to thousands of requests without any noticeable delay. From the outside, both seem perfectly reliable. But these numbers tell us surprisingly little about how the infrastructure is actually operated, or what happens when something goes wrong.

In our latest article, we take a closer look at the work behind validator and RPC operations, why familiar engineering practices sometimes need to be reconsidered, and what it takes to provide infrastructure that others can depend on. There's a lot more to running a node than making sure it's running.

In 1970, George Akerlof showed how a used car market fills up with lemons. Buyers can't see quality, so they pay for the average car, and the owners of good cars stop selling. Some editors rejected the paper as too trivial. It later helped win him a Nobel. The same logic applies to how delegators choose validators.

The way out is signals that are expensive to fake: independent certification, audited financials and real liability for slashing. These cost a careless operator more than a careful one, and that difference is what makes them believable. New post: The Market for Lemons in Staking
