Not quite. He was an actor people knew, but because of his much more famous actor brother. He’s if Casey Affleck shot the president
one thing people don't talk about is how crazy the john wilkes booth thing was. he wasn't some lone nutter he was a genuinely famous actor. it would be like if george clooney assassinated the sitting president.

There is a moment at the very very end of Abdul El-Sayed's podcast with @ezraklein where he talks about the idea of "speaking truth to pain." Not a day has gone by for the last month where I haven't thought about that line and, increasingly, I see it as a skeleton key to a politics that many people are desperate for

I think people would have reacted to the railroad very differently if Cornelius Vanderbilt kept saying the trains are alive and want to kill you.
This kind of public panic is something I have never seen in living memory. Probably nothing like it since the Industrial Revolution. We seem to have adapted to other innovations like computerization, process optimization, the car, and air travel without this kind of mass panic.

On the one hand, this is concerning because I just learned that without U2, Brandon Flowers would have never made the Killers. And if he had AI, he probably would have just made more U2s, so the world is deprived of something new and original 1/
I am not joking when I say this. Spotify, Apple Music, and streaming in general is over. AI music is now very, very good. You just don't know yet because all AI music circulating today is from ~2-3 generations ago. Suno v6 pro et al has solved infinite personalized music.

on the other, I just don’t think this is going to happen. Songwriters are literally vessels of the divine creator. Brandon Flowers, Bono, Dolly Parton, Bob Dylan, Michael Jackson all say this. Maybe AI replaces muzak, but it’s not going to replace actual Music because it can’t.

The more I learn about him, the more I realize he’s a profoundly weird artist (complimentary). All These Things That I’ve Done was him trying to channel U2! Because he was super into U2!! And not the good era of U2! The 2000 era U2!!
You know when you come across a new song and realize it'll be there the rest of your life?

I’ve been trying to process Brandon Flowers revering U2 all day. Bringing it up to anyone/everyone. and it finally hit me I just wish I could tell my dad. my dad would LOVE this

Just casually dropping a reference to Bono here, again. Jimmy tries to help him by bringing up cool people, like Springsteen and he’s just like, Bono ❤️
Brandon Flowers' ernesty is what sells me. This was supposed to be a silly bit, but then sings that performing is like flying like an eagle, and it touches Jimmy. There isn't a single bone in his body that isn't completely sincere. It rocks.

Searching state unclaimed money is seriously incredibly easy. Everyone should do it every couple of years! just google your state and unclaimed money and find the .gov site. You don’t need AI to do this
Late, but a lol thing about the way Meta is really pushing the "Muse can save you money!" use is that all the examples of it (searching state unclaimed money sites, switching car insurance, negotiating cable bill) require huge amounts of personal data you'd normally NEVER give

The craziest part of growing up in the northeast is finding out knowing a ton of Irish and Italians is actually not standard for the United States.

the thing that’s driving me crazy about the NHJ article is that everyone is saying she sent her kid to the local school. She did not! She used the school choice program and chose a bad school! That is not the same thing as going to a local school and getting whatever you get!

can someone explain the civilizational stakes to me like i’m five? hacking into the power grid is the only one i can really think of but surely there’s more to it?
Replying to @hilbertspaess
A common response is “if they truly believe this, why are they still building it?” At OpenAI, many have not deeply internalized the civilizational stakes. At Anthropic, the stakes are well-understood, but they are locked in a race to get there first - they believe no one else will act responsibly, so they must do it themselves, despite the risk.
