Consider: Meat loaf but with the addition of gelatinized stock to be mixed with the mince.

"What’s the first operating system you ever tried?" Does the Commodore-licensed Microsoft BASIC on a C64 count? If not, that'd probably be ProDOS on an Apple IIgs, courtesy of California schools. It was also my introduction to booting machines off a network!

I would say unkind things here today, but I think I'm just going to do something else for a while.

Yeah, agreed. It's probably why I don't tend to engage well with anyone who's aggressively descriptivist. That's typically a, "That's nice. Thanks for sharing. Have a nice day." It's being argumentative over wanting to garner understanding.

(Er, that should absolutely be "aggressively prescriptivist.")

"I'm sure you see the flaw here—most students are even less comfortable with induction than they are with recursion." okasaki.blogspot.com/2008/10… I guess I should be less surprised that I go more for recursion. Being a math major meant becoming well-practiced at induction.

The cool thing about my last name is that it shows up in recipes written in Austrian. „In einem Reindl Butter schmelzen. Den Reindlboden mit Erdäpfelscheiben leicht überlagernd auslegen und salzen.“ What isn't cool is the need to sort it out from a braising pan and a saucepan.

I'm one of those people who's shipped Haskell to production, and I sometimes wonder how I managed to pull it off. I think it was probably the fact that I wrote my prototype in it, and the stakeholders didn't—counter to Fred Brooks' advice—want to throw it away.

Waiting for someone to come across and assert that DDR5 itself implies having ECC in the same way that my DDR3-having workstation has ECC. I've been left yearning for 20 years for SECDED to become ubiquitous parlance for exactly this reason.

"Might as well mandate suits, COBOL and 8:30am meetings …" Hey, now. COBOL is perfectly fine.

I have a more traditional "center of the plate" upbringing when it comes to devising recipes. It works well when you have a protein plus "some other stuff." It becomes a problem when the plate is nothing but vegetables, and you're not keen on everything basically being tapas.

That said, there's nothing wrong with tapas, and with a fridge full of quart containers of choices like black bean cakes and candied Brussels sprouts, it could become easy and quick just to nuke what you want and throw rice in the rice cooker.

Why do I not like using dry pasta? If you get a bad batch of something like spaghetti, the shit breaks during cooking.

"Since all C is valid C++ code …" Do you know how much simpler the world of software would be if that were true?

Back when I used to live by myself, two things I did immediately when I got home from work: start a pot of stock warming up and begin tempering whatever protein I intended to use. When I started living with other people, I stopped that, and I really wish I hadn't.

The Orange Site sometimes delivers. Apropos a trend to repatriate from the public cloud given price hikes, a comment: "Who could have possibly predicted that the trap-shaped box was a trap?" Sorry to pull a Sweet Bro and Hella Jeff here, but I told you about stairs. :y

Yeah. These are the keyboards that you'd find on AS/400 terminals. (Well, modulo the connectors. The InfoWindow terminals used a modular jack, but these are DIN.)

The real question is: With the recent bot bans, will we ever hear that Pépito has returned from his journey outside?

Consider: Cacio e pepe but distinctly Austrian because I don't have the 30 minutes to let maccheroni dough rest to hydrate, let alone a chitarra to cut it. It's kind of shitpost, but I kinda want to try this at some point.

Crushed black pepper and pumpkinseed oil blooming in one pan, große Nockerl in the other. Tiroler Bergkäse and Graukäse together in some ratio seem like they'd be an Alpine analog of pecorino romano. The concern is if the Nockerl water will be starchy enough for the sauce.
