The AUKUS Inquiry grossly exaggerates the cost of used nuclear fuel disposal.
Onkalo, the world's first final disposal facility which is due to begin operations in the coming months, is estimated to cost $9.7 billion AUD over its entire lifecycle.
The false $180 billion figure from this inquiry is based on the 120 year cost of a 2015 proposal for a deep geological repository in South Australia that would have hosted 13% of the world's used nuclear fuel, far greater than the waste that will be generated by AUKUS or any future civil nuclear power program in Australia.
