This always gets posted as if Hemingway was just a writer the FBI randomly decided to watch. There's multiple things he's lying about in that highlighted text, including the ridiculous statement that we taught Germans to view themselves as "congenital villains." No one seriously believes that. The Germans of that era weren't born evil, and not every German was involved in atrocities. There's a big difference between the correct broad statement that Germany was the bad guy in the war and the ridiculous straw man that the Germans are genetically evil. One of the many lessons of Nazi Germany is that ordinary people are capable of doing monstrous things. Therefore we need to guard our own hearts and societies so that the kinds of things that happened there don't happen anywhere else, including in our own society.
