In 1972 an Australian woman could not even open a bank account without the backing of a man. This is the inside story of how a group of feminists forced political change.

So glad Gisèle Pelicot will publish her memoir A Hymn to Life next year. Her voice removed shame from survivors and held a mirror up to the ordinariness of male violence against women and girls, so often dismissed in a patriarchal world.
“I hope to convey a message of strength and courage to all those who are subjected to difficult ordeals. May they never feel shame. And in time, may they even learn to savour life again and find peace.”

Labor is helping some of Australia’s most vulnerable people secure their most fundamental need—a roof over their heads.
That’s why we’re opening a $1 billion fund for crisis accommodation for women and children fleeing domestic violence and we’re boosting our funding of homelessness groups so we can continue our work to reduce homelessness.
There is more work to do, but these announcements will make a real difference to women and children escaping family and domestic violence, and people at risk of homelessness.
