The NYU-Marron report on electrification is out: It pairs electrification and other components to develop a high-throughput infrastructure framework, which slashes time off of existing commuter and intercity rail services. We call it Momentum -- transitcosts.com/wp-content/…

Momentum, Nolan Hicks’, fantastic report is up. It ties together a lot of positive threads in US passenger railroading that have emerged recently. *Electrification is salvation for passenger rail*. Embrace it, run trains frequently, & get butts in seats:

This new station in xi’an looks pretty spectacular. What it does that you don’t see in the US. Besides the obvious stuff is the use of *columns*. We have jettisoned columns, largely, because we think they’re bad/unsightly. But no columns means larger, more expensive caverns.

Gave a talk about transit costs research at the University of Toronto (@imfgtoronto). Prof Matti Siemiatycki had a lot of excellent questions in the Q&A. For those that don’t know, Toronto probably has the largest capital program in North America: imfg.org/research/doc/?doc_i…

A very misguided cliché I hear in transit is “Nobody cares about opex because you can’t cut a ribbon.” Of course you can have a big photo op for a major operational improvement! And the politician that funds it will still be in office when it opens, unlike a capital project

We just posted a rolling stock costs dataset. It’s early days, but hopefully will be a useful tool to understand how costs vary. We have included some early takeaways, but plan to do more: transitcosts.com/rolling-sto…

My main advice to everyone building transit projects: cut your timeline in half. For this one, let’s cut it by 75%, at a minimum.
This makes no sense. We are outraged that @PennDOTNews plans to push construction of the Roosevelt Boulevard Subway until 2040!
