My new book from @OUPAcademic, The Nonprofit Crisis, takes a look at the vital role that nonprofits play in American society and the disturbing erosion of public trust that they have experienced in recent years. Available here: amazon.com/Nonprofit-Crisis-…
This was one of my recent faves from Vital City

More warning flags for the nonprofit sector. They cannot take public trust (or tax exempt status) for granted.

@GivingReview co-editor @mhartmannmke considers @IUPhilanthropy’s new What Americans Think of Nonprofits & Philanthropy 2026, and what it might reveal about the nonprofit sector …
The report finds what it calls “a substantial recognition gap: Americans may interact with nonprofits regularly while not identifying those interactions as nonprofit service use.
“More broadly,” it continues, “many people may associate nonprofit services primarily with direct assistance or basic needs, while overlooking the broader range of nonprofit institutions they encounter.”
According to Hartmann: “The nonprofit sector has developed an academic-professional infrastructure sophisticated enough to discover that most Americans don’t know there is a nonprofit sector.
“Perhaps the public doesn’t need the ‘nonprofit sector,’” he writes, “nearly as much as the nonprofit sector needs the nonprofit sector.”

This album is criminally underrated. Also a good excuse for me to re-up my Everlast appreciation post — gregberman.substack.com/p/li…
26 years of ‘Eat At Whitey’s'. Much love to everyone who’s been listening since day one and to everyone who continues to discover these songs.

This is consistent with the argument of The Nonprofit Crisis — nonprofits can’t take public trust for granted.

The report What Americans Think About Nonprofits & Philanthropy 2026 from the IU Lilly Family School of Philanthropy & the @Hewlett_Found found that confidence in nonprofits is higher than confidence in other institutions but remains limited and malleable.

If you missed the recent Urban Institute event "Trust, Tax Policy, and the Future of the Nonprofit Sector," I encourage you to watch the recording that has just been posted. It was a fascinating discussion about the challenges facing the nonprofit sector.

Great guy, great choice. @chriswatler
The mayor appointed criminal justice reformer Chris Watler to serve as chair of the Board of Correction today. Watler will lead oversight efforts as the city attempts to close Rikers Island and continues to deal with unabated violence in the jails.

Two thumbs up for the desserts at Trudie’s
Trudie’s Tavern in Brooklyn is an amalgamation. With its pink napkins, blue velvet upholstery, dirty Martinis, oysters, and a lusty strip steak dripping in bone-marrow butter, it’s certainly romantic. But it’s also a casual restaurant, good for a burger and a beer with a friend, or an early dinner with the kids. It’s a little kitschy, too: the bathroom, with 80s-era baseball memorabilia and multicolored party lighting. “The menu is a similar mishmash,” Helen Rosner writes.
