Society needs a science writing community that is strong, skilled and trusted, never more than now, when misinformation and disinformation is so easy to produce.
Protecting the people who do that work becomes a crucial pillar of a functional society.
No association can promise a fail-safe against determined fraud. What we can promise is that our members will not face this new challenging landscape alone.
Our statement below.

I took the day off work and went to the park to listen to other authors speak about writing. One of them happened to be one of my favourite ones: @JenShahade 😍
The @bryantparknyc Reading Room Event was so magical. Books, salon atmosphere, perfect weather. Reminds me of why I loved living in NYC 💕

We are banning social media access for under 16s.
These days kids must find their feet in a world where technology intrudes into every area of their life.
I just can’t let that go on anymore. So we’re giving children their childhoods back.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The UK Government's 'careful review' of the research found a small correlation between children's use of social media and wellbeing, but no evidence of a causal effect:

Taking a break from complaining about WSOP reg fees to complain about the choice of red as a dominant background colour in the rotation of graphics for the stream. It’s a very odd decision.
All production designers will know that red has the longest wavelength of any colour in the spectrum and that causes a weird focal tug of war for the viewer, forcing their eyes muscles into a constant state of flex and adjustment. There’s also a shifting depth perception which creates a dizzying, straining effect.
I really enjoyed Ali and Nick on the heads-up broadcast last night but these streams are starting to give me visual fatigue and I’d bet I’m not the only one.
This made me so emotional. What an incredible mission driven by so much love... Please support @ScienceNelson's son's incredible goal if you can. Donation link here: justgiving.com/page/lovisain…

I’ve enjoyed my wee break from regular writing since VSO stopped doing poker. I still have my monthly LUSPS column but open to offers from any outlet who still hires human writers.

5 years ago we had one mission: to show young writers regardless of their background that science communication can be for them. The support of incredible partners like @newscientist is what keeps that message alive, and I couldn't be more grateful.
We are delighted to share that the 2025 Young Science Writer Award winning essay has now been published by @newscientist
