I can’t stress enough how little an idea matters compared to the agency of the people executing the idea.
I have had the privilege of knowing and sometimes even working with some of the most successful people (by various metrics).
The difference between mediocre and excellent work and outcomes is predominantly one of agency.
In practice this means: they dont wait for things to happen to them they go out and make things happen for them.
They don’t wait for someone else to do something, for someone to teach them, for someone to give them the path, etc. They just go out and find a way to do it.
I think the single biggest superpower these people have is the realization/belief that the world around them is completely mutable. Most everything that happens is because a person made it happen.
I used to tell people to look around the room you’re sitting in. Look at everything. Every noun. It almost all exists because a person willed it into existence. Nothing is stopping you from doing the same.
I see people online all the time dismissing someone else’s success because “I had that idea first” or whatever. I mean… yeah? If so then the difference is… you. So a bit of a self own whenever I hear that.
Number one tip: act with agency.

I really believed a whole generation of developers, who only know open source from npm and pypi, miss how open source actually used to work.
When Debian or a Linux distribution ships a dependency they take responsibility of it. If there is a security issue and it’s not fixed by the developer upstream, they fix it for their users.
Debian and others basically vendor every thing they distribute. They honor the license and they maintain patches. Most of the stuff that you get from your Linux distribution is basically a (small) fork.
The same is true for Apple, Microsoft and others. The open source software they ship, they carry that responsibility.
That doesn’t mean that security fixes are not upstreamed, but Apple or Debian or anyone else won’t jump in Twitter to shame a developer into compliance with their ways. They are not dependent on the health of a packaging infrastructure. They own their software including all the things it depends on.
I want that thinking back. Because it fundamentally makes people feel more responsibility and it shares the burden of issues. It also does not put so much focus and attention on the one overworked developer who just happened to have too much of the world depend on their library. Remember: they carry a responsibility they never signed up to and they never got compensated for.

I've been waiting to share this. Huge updates coming soon to Laravel Cloud over the next few weeks... ☁️
• A new $5/month plan. We want Cloud to be accessible to every Laravel developer. Simple as that.
• Spend caps. Set a spend cap on your account and we'll either alert you or shut off compute when you hit it. No surprise bills.
• True scale-to-zero compute. Hibernation has been around for a while, but we've made wake-up over 10x faster. App, database, and cache wake-up is now measured in milliseconds. Your users won't even notice.
• New bot protection rules keep scale-to-zero apps scaled to zero more of the time, cutting your compute spend even further.
• Fully managed, auto-scaling queues with observability. We've rebuilt "queue clusters" into a new product: "managed queues". Set a max worker count and we handle the rest. Scales on queue depth, scales to zero when idle, so you're never over-provisioned.
Huge thanks to everyone building on Laravel Cloud. Your feedback shaped most of what's above - keep it coming. ❤️

Since I'm on a streak of semi-unpopular management takes:
This is very real. I've seen many high-powered software engineering ICs turn people managers and become completely detached from the tech. Like, you cannot imagine that they were ever truly technical.
If you make the step to management you need to be paranoid this does not happen to you. The good news: AI has made this 100x easier. There is just no reason not to have an agent hacking during that 1:1 about performance scores

Lately, status in Europe is earned by trashing others (eg: the US). Europeans are stuck, soothing ourselves with the hope that the US will fail. That's toxic. The US may well be fine. We should use this opportunity showing that we can do better than them.

So long Elon, and thanks for all the fish!
Looking forward to my first day as a backend engineer at @hellofreshdev tomorrow!
More than 7 years later, this is still my favorite programming book of all time! Taught me so much about #django and programming in general, while also doubling my consumption of ice cream. Ah the memories 🥲 @audreyfeldroy @pydanny

Best explanation of SemVer I've seen yet: FAILS.FEATURES.BUGS
Replying to @simonw
Absolutely. The thing about semver major version numbers are that they don't mean new stuff, they're a permanent reminder of how many times you got the API wrong. Semver doesn't mean MAJOR.MINOR.PATCH, it means FAILS.FEATURES.BUGS
"The menu here is quite big. Are there certain dishes that you can recommend?"
"So we have fish, different kinds, whatever you like. We have pasta, different kinds. Steak, and pork, schnitzel, all different things."
Umm ok, thanks for the help 😅
