The @MORTHIndia has proposed making Advanced Emergency Braking System (AEBS) mandatory on passenger cars in India. Under the draft rules, all new M1 category car models would need AEBS from 1 October 2030, while models already in production would need it from 1 October 2032. The system automatically applies the brakes when the driver fails to respond in an emergency, either to avoid a collision or to reduce its impact.
The draft also covers a few other safety features. ELKS (Emergency Lane Keeping System) steers the car back if it is about to drift out of its lane. ACSF (Automatic Command Steering Functionalities) covers features where the car steers itself, like auto lane change or self-parking. These features have to meet set technical standards called AIS (Automotive Industry Standards): AIS-185 for AEBS, AIS-191 for ELKS and AIS-193 for ACSF and steering effort. Most of these rules would apply from 1 October 2027 or 2028 for cars that already offer these features. ACSF and ELKS would become compulsory from 1 October 2029 for cars registered as taxis or other transport vehicles.
These are only draft rules for now. The public can send objections and suggestions to MoRTH at [email protected] within 30 days of the notification being made public. After that, the government will decide on the final rules.
