I've seen versions of this cope and they all ignore how many seats Dems started with. The "smart take" was that it would be hard for them to crack 230 bc they had so many swing seats already - Rs entered the cycle with just two members in districts won by Kamala.
The biggest GOP House majority since the New Deal was the 2014 majority of 247 seats. Dems have already zoomed past that. And their big New Deal era majorities relied on Solid South conservatives who were replaced by Rs long ago. A majority of this size, where the most conservative member is Henry Cuellar (a pro-life Hispanic who's otherwise a normal liberal), is brand new.
Vermonster here. Mayor Bernie ran on affordable housing (UVM effect raised rents) and lifting the pay freeze on city police, which endorsed him. He cut deals with real estate developers. He cracked down on protestors.
Mamdani getting elected and spending a year on extremely popular projects helped Dems everywhere imo.
He was supposed to be on the new Mount Rushmore of scary liberals. Saw him on lots of attack mailers. Didn't scare people at all.
When I sat down w Mamdani during the 2025 primary he said his model was Bernie in Burlington - the "ooh, scary socialist" mayor who capitalizes on all the attention he gets and makes civic improvements so it stops being scary. And so far that's clearly worked. semafor.com/article/06/12/20…

True story: when I was doing full-time “women in extremism” reporting, literal ISIS members living in Syria (emailing/tweeting/using other social media platforms) were better at getting back to me than most government offices.

Elaine Luria was a Navy commander and a tough questioner on HASC before she was defeated. Now she’s getting started all over again.
If y’all want some weekend reading, here’s a profile I wrote in ‘22. defensenews.com/congress/202…
Thinking about some questions to ask DoD:
1. The Fifth Fleet commander is based in Manama, Bahrain.
2. That base was destroyed in the opening days of the “war” and no casualties were reported.
3. Did the Fifth Fleet Commander evacuate before the US initiated strikes on Iran?
4. Where is the Fifth Fleet commander today?
5. Why is he not embarked on one of the ships in the region?
very good line
