親友が私の就職面接を台無しにしたことを知ったのは、内定を失ってから三か月後だった。
私は大阪で一人暮らしをしていた。家賃を払うために居酒屋で働きながら、毎晩パソコンで求人を探していた。
ようやく見つけたのは、小さなデザイン会社の正社員募集だった。昔から入りたかった業界で、書類選考も通過した。
面接の前日、親友の美咲に相談した。
「緊張してる。明日、変なこと言わないかな」
美咲は笑って言った。
「大丈夫。あんたなら受かるよ」
面接は手応えがあった。担当者も私の作品を褒めてくれた。
しかし、一週間後に届いたメールは不採用だった。
落ち込んでいた私に、美咲は「会社の見る目がなかったんだよ」と慰めてくれた。
それから三か月後、居酒屋に来た客が、偶然その会社の社員だった。
私の名前を聞いた彼は、少し困った顔をした。

新しいアパートに越してきて五日目の夜、郵便受けにメモが入っていた。「午前三時に料理をするのはやめてください」
私は料理ができない。持っているのはケトルと電子レンジだけだ。夜十一時にはもう寝ているし、コンロに火をつけたことすらない。
翌日、管理人に聞いてみた。彼は首の後ろをさすった。
「実はね、前の入居者さんも同じメモをもらったんですよ。」
その夜、私は二時五十分にアラームをセットし、暗闇の中でノートを持って座っていた。
午前三時七分、においがやってきた。温かくて、バターの香りがする、間違いなく焼きたてのパンのにおいだ。
私はそれを書き留めた。そしてもう一行、書き足した。機械が目を覚ますような、かすかなうなり音。
不安な気持ちのまま、においをたどって一階へ降りた。
