It pains me to post anything that risks flattering Iranians but Persian really is just an incomparable delight in the ear and on the tongue and I think this is why elites all over a global neighborhood fell for it for centuries. Irrestible to human physiology like sugar.
Greatest sounding languages of all time: 1. Persian 2. Latin 3. German 4. Syriac 5. Avestan

I need to be incredibly honest with you: they didn’t have phone
how did earlier scholars master mathematics, astronomy, philosophy and religious law, while most scholars today struggle with basic academic literacy? when did scholarship become so intellectually impoverished.

yeah i dont 100% co-sign but this is increasingly where i'm at. everyone interesting i know is playing around with genAI and seeing what it can and cannot be useful for and all the namby-pamby bullshitters whos main thing is 'i like books' are in full ostrich mode
AI IS AMAZING I know it's hip to worry about the decline in book reading and how chatbots will impoverish our brains. But TBH, this is not at all what I see. I wrote about how we're in this wild moment for intellectual flourishing and how all of us are the children of dancers.

there's only one way to properly deal with the curation crisis and properly fulfill item no. 1 of our code of ethics (stewardship) and that is to throw everything we've got at it & given the limits of human/financial capital available to most/all of the institutions involved...

all im saying is. dont be making others read generated prose, that's gross (except for when its admin pablum then w/e), but lord have mercy the things that are possible for me to do now because of genAI that I only dreamed of as a grad student with no computational chops...

@ any internet researchers/archaeologists: Archive any old legacy PHP blogs/sites you care about, as there is a nonzero chance they will vanish from the live web forever in the coming days.

i wanna experience one sided love so bad, the peak yearning, the little efforts, the tiniest interactions making your day…slow burn love stories just hit different, one small moment at a time it sounds so beautiful 🤍

i have a bad feeling in the pit of my stomach that eventually the boomer property tax revolt will foment a reverse-polarity version in young people ("well then why should i keep paying Social Security taxes?") and the entire concept of cooperative public goods disintegrates

i had a free slot in my schedule for my world archaeology survey so i asked the students what topics they'd like me to cover. i obliged in spades, including to the ONE student who said 'political rot in the sciences' that poor kid had no idea what they were in for

foundational experience for me was doing archaeological fieldwork in totalitarian monarchies and dictatorships in grad school. i have too many examples of the politicization of science from my own life that have nothing to do with professors being left wing to be able to shut up

im sorry but you cannot beat me with a weaksauce culture-war rejection of the Strong Critique of Objectivity. i will simply overpower you with my own life story. science is not about Truth, it is about Power. eat my shorts clowns

I'm slowly but surely working through my back-catalog of blog posts. Got through some of the easier stuff and now onto the whackadoodle side of things. Anyway, hope you enjoy! (Link below)
