How is it that LA can completely (re)build mass transit IN THE MIDDLE of their cities, but we can’t connect LA to SF by rail, which is mostly undeveloped land? The largest in city mass transit project in America is cooking and the train is sucking. What’s up with that? How is the outcome so different?

Reading a history of the bond market recently, and the author noted that Britain defeated Napoleon mostly because their consol bond market left the British military much better funded than France’s weak post-revolutionary capital markets.
One Alexander Hamilton studied the British bond market, and then consolidated American revolutionary debt into one tradable market, which gave birth to what became the New York stock exchange, Liberty bonds, and the world’s largest capital markets.
An army might march on its stomach, but it’s borrowed money that pays for the food and ammunition, and the one who can borrow the most generally wins.

I made an interactive map of every farm field in California! Inspired by the @Snapchat map!
All 384k of them: lettuce in Salinas 🥬, cherries in Brentwood 🍒, dates in Coachella 🌴, and 1.6 million acres of almonds 🌰 Zoom into any field and see exactly what's growing there.
I've been obsessed with maps from years of hiking and cycling. Models like Opus 5.5 / Astra making building with them so fun!
Built on public crop data from @CA_DWR.
