This is like the epigraph for the entire Trump 2.0 presidency: ‘’I don’t give a damn. We’re making a fortune’
TRUMP on HIGH GAS PRICES: We’re making money like we’ve never made before. They’ll say: President Trump is bragging about all the money they're making while people are suffering at the pump. I don’t give a damn. We’re making a freaking fortune.

We're visiting SteelyKid at college, staying in a chain hotel, and the TV in the room doesn't have a Fox affiliate on the cable, so I can't watch the World Series. Somebody needs to be sent to Guantanamo Bay for this...

They've got Fox News if I wanted crazy people yelling at me, and FS1 running a college football game, but no regular Fox with the World fucking Series. Why does the Marriott company hate America?

you just do it. I know everyone hates to hear that but there’s no secret. pick a book you’ll enjoy and put your phone in another room and do it even when it seems hard. and then do it as often as you can.
People who read books for fun in the big 26, genuinely how do you do it. I salute you your brain is made of sterner stuff than mine

It has to come from faculty. Education begins with scholars and teachers. That doesn't mean it *will* come from them. Just this: if there will be successful reform, it can only come from faculty.

Sad news today. After 5 years of medical training, one of my mates has been struck off due to a minor discretion. He slept with one of his patients and can no longer do the job he loves. What a waste of time and money. Genuinely a great guy and a brilliant vet

If you mean two total, The Pip. If you mean two guests in addition to me, The Pip and my dad. (I'm super boring, I know...)
If you had two World Series tickets and knew whoever you invited to go with you would accept, who would you ask?

A reminder about Tampa's offense as we get this series started and the broadcast starts laying it on thick with the clichés:

I mean, just an all-time TV segment. Making Chuck do Who He Play For multiple times in a row with the same players is a brilliant idea and I was legit crying laughing by the end, my god.

The main difficulty in writing is deciding what to leave out, in order to create the functional but misleading illusion that there exist clear and distinct ideas.

I don't think people understand how much entertainment of the past was just going to your friend's house. Like play some cards. Have a beer. Sing some songs. Maybe dance. All for free (besides $1 for the beer). But that's not good enough for anyone anymore
We CANNOT even afford hobbies. We CANNOT afford to go out with friends. We CANNOT afford to exist anywhere outside our homes. They then call it a mental health crisis. It's not. It's an affordability crisis.

Thanks, I think we are speaking past one another a bit. The problem isn't an imperative for research. The problem is that this imperative has crowded out any real attention and concern for undergrad education, especially Gen Ed.
Replying to @huwaliyasuntob
I'm sympathetic to the possibility that things are different in fields like literature and philosophy and that new research is of less fundamental importance to how they work as disciplines, but they're not my field so I'm reluctant to push that idea too forcefully

Presentation on AI for science, Q&A: Me: This helps with idea generation, but isn't the real bottleneck the need to do experiments? Presenter: Yes, but a bunch of companies are automating wet labs, which is easy. Me: I know a bunch of chemists who would disagree with that...
