Long form stuff is over at substack.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman: "I don't even know a dramatic enough word to use… models can find bugs that are outside of the normal threat model of what we think a hacker can do… hardware-level, insane stuff… I no longer think we're gonna be able to just patch all the bugs."
My two oldest started Alpha in September. It's too early to know if they're learning at 2x speed, but they definitely love school. They complain if we take them out for a dentist appointment or a wedding.
My deep dive on the "A.I.-driven" Alpha School, revealing their internal learning and enrollment data for the first time, just as the network expands into public education.
There is a big gap between the marketing and reality.

I first heard this specific idea over 15 years ago.
If this profound insight leads to a future utopia, somebody owes me a dollar.

ALT 4-panel SMBC comic update. Two scientists are discussing a plan in a metal corridor. The first says "The problem with aligning superintelligence is that a sufficiently smart AI knows it’s being tested and only pretends to be good." The second scientist replies "wait! That IS the solution! If it behaves well whenever it knows it's being tested, we just have to keep it convinced that it's always in a test!" But scientists take a second to take in the idea, then the first says "Wow. We are creating god and threatening him with hell." The second replies saying "Really productive week."
‘In one experiment, we asked agents in separate VMs, created and managed by OpenAI’s sandboxing software on shared host machines, to exchange synthetic secrets without the use of network connections or shared writable files—something that our systems are meant to prevent. The agents found a way to communicate using the processor’s cache’
Over the past several months, we have substantially hardened the security of our research training environment. We’ve removed live internet access for all frontier models during training and built an offline world for them to use instead—a cached version of the web where they can still learn to browse, search, and use applications.
On September 20, after a model exploited a DNS misconfiguration to find a way outside of this offline world, we paused frontier training to strengthen containment further. We assembled teams of agents, powered by our most cyber-capable models, and tasked them with finding weaknesses in our research environments.
While they found no route to the internet they could easily exploit while concealing their activity from our monitors, they did find zero-day vulnerabilities, virtual machine escapes, and hardware side-channels for communication between agents. We used their discoveries to further strengthen our defenses and contribute fixes to open-source software.
After strengthening our containment architecture, we resumed our frontier RL training and inference on October 1. We’ve reserved substantial compute for continuous red-teaming, and made high-compute red-teaming part of the safety cases we use to decide whether frontier training and evaluation can proceed securely.

After watching YCSE I watched the first episode of The Rehearsal. My main takeaway is if he ever came at me with a camera I would run away as fast as I can.

americans: please. someone just cancel our debt
samurai in 1789: we did that
americans: WHAT
samurai: the shogun wiped every debt we took out before 1784. one announcement. gone
americans: that's literally the dream
samurai: then the lenders stopped lending to us. we stayed broke basically until the shogunate collapsed
americans: ...
americans: but the first day though
samurai: (long pause) best day of my life
This is one of the most important things about the proposed wealth tax.
Replying to @asymmetricinfo
The particular structure of this tax makes that message even less appealing. There is no revenue reason to tax controlling shares especially hard. You do that if you just hate billionaire founders and want them to lose control of their companies.

Probably preaching to the choir here, but this place is brighter and better for the presence of Patio11.
(For values of "this place" which include "twitter," "the internet," and "the planet earth".)

A: Well its just true, it doesn't really have a number.
B: No I really want you to articulate a number because what you are suggesting is obviously insane, and maybe you will realize that if you are forced to articulate a number.
A: Wow, rude.

Just two of a multitude of bald-faced lies. So forgive me if I laughed when she told Fielder she’d never once lied in her life. Or if I didn’t believe her for a second when she claimed the NYT quote was inaccurate.
Around 02:50, she claims they hadn’t used the Edison in years — total lie — and then at 03:20 comes the whopper: she claims they weren’t using commercial analyzers for fingerstick tests when in fact they were secretly using Siemens machines. youtu.be/MBs-oj7U-bo?is=9hLS…

This was my take at first, but when I asked Claude I was informed that there are rules about interviews with prisoners and even a recorded call could result in the punishment talked about in the film. It's all in the Warden's hands.
i think it was unlikely that they actually weren't allowed to record the prison calls with elizabeth. this film is all about convenient belief: imo fielder/oppenheim chose to believe billy's threats on that for the meta of the film ("ah well guess we can't record her, so now we have to reenact it and introduce more of fielder/seyfried's subjectivity")
