Good old EPO 💉
At least athletics are not afraid of catching big fishes.
The Athletics Integrity Unit has provisionally suspended reigning world marathon champion 🇰🇪 Peres Jepchirchir after an out-of-competition sample collected in Kenya returned an adverse analytical finding for EPO. The sample was taken before her Sydney Marathon win.
One of the most decorated marathoners of this generation:
• Olympic champion, Tokyo 2021 🥇
• Reigning world champion, Tokyo 2025 🥇
• Four-time World Marathon Major winner: New York (2021), Boston (2022), London (2024), Sydney (2026) 🏆 🏆 🏆 🏆
• Her 2:16:16 to win the 2024 London Marathon was the women's-only world record at the time
• She owns a personal best of 2:14:43 from Valencia 2025
She can request analysis of the B sample, and the case proceeds to a charge or is closed depending on what follows.
Nice cat fight girls, crazy finish after almost 5 hours / 180km (when Longo won in 1989, it was in less than 2 hours / 74km)

For the physiology geeks here, some funny coincidences:
➡️kJ on powermeter are a good proxy for kcal (cycling)
➡️running speed in m/s (on the flat) is very close to w/kg
➡️climbing time on Ventoux is similar to your half marathon PR
➡️km x weight is your kcal expenditure running
Good riddance

This is quite a big fish… but in triathlon

Nice tribute from Piti dog
Mi reconocimiento a @alafpolak1 por su fantástica carrera y su legado. Uno de mis principales rivales durante muchos años compartiendo carretera y objetivos. Todo lo mejor 👏🏼
Last but not least, Pogi 2026 vs Pantani 1995
(no powermeter = bad pacing by Marco 😅)
Another interesting comparison on AH
@lancearmstrong vs @TamauPogi
How would’ve @lancearmstrong 2001 compared to Pogacar on Alpe d’Huez ?
After a faster first 3k, both attacking at the same place, Armstrong steadily loses time on Pogi, caught by Evenepoel 2k from finish
Last 2k at similar speeds but Armstrong was grimacing while Pogi was easy
Ok, if bike/aero/nutrition/training were worth the 2:35 lost by Armstrong on Pogacar (spoiler : they’re not) on Alpe d’Huez, your benchmark is a guy who used EPO, blood bags and testosterone (and put TWO minutes into Ullrich, another doped rider)
Replying to @oufeh @lancearmstrong
Bike, aero, clothing, nutrition, training methods….there is more to it than just being a human who rides a bike for work

This sport will always be about using every trick as soon as it’s not banned (and as long you can before it is). That’s true for gearing and of course fpr medications.
Several Women's WorldTeams told WielerFlits they're concerned some riders gain a TT aero edge by using bra padding to fake a larger bust. Artificially modifying clothing is banned under UCI rules, but the practice is rarely enforced.
