This is a really important issue. The gap between 40 hours a week at the minimum wage and starting to pay tax at the higher rate is now merely £20,000. The minimum wage continually goes up. The higher-rate tax threshold stays the same. You end up with 10 million people all earning not quite enough money.

To me, the intriguing aspect of the John Lewis advertisement is that grandma lives alone in a five-bedroom house within easy reach of a John Lewis.... whereas you couldn't film the ad in the children's flat, as it would be too small to accommodate the camera crew.
