OCRia-1 is now on OpenDocRouter
It’s absurdly fast 🔥 parse PDFs at lightspeed
OpenDocRouter: opendocrouter.ai
You can also try it as part of our agentic harness in LlamaParse: cloud.llamaindex.ai
Yesterday we launched OCRia-1, our new state-of-the-art document parsing model powering LlamaParse.
Today, it’s on OpenDocRouter! Run it alongside other parsing models on your own documents and see how it compares on accuracy, speed, and cost.
Set the model to llamaindex/ocria-1 in your parse request to try it. New accounts start with $5 in credit: opendocrouter.ai/models

Automating report creation can save a significant amount of time, especially when reports need to be updated regularly (e.g. monthly or yearly).
A very useful tool for this is Quarto in R. It is a modern publishing system that allows you to combine text, code, and results in a single document. Your R code is executed directly inside the document, and outputs such as tables, figures, and summaries are automatically included in the final report. You can also choose the output format, for example HTML, PDF, or DOCX.
If you are creating the same report repeatedly, you simply update the input data and run the Quarto document again. That’s it.

I've been testing decision models such as Jev and Drex Max for research tasks (e.g., paper classification).
Just published our initial exploratory work on it.
Drex Max is a strong fit for our use cases, and we are already planning production efforts around it.
Multimodal decision models also open up a whole range of exciting areas. We'll share more results and resources soon.

Are loops in R really that bad?
I've often come across the argument that loops should generally be avoided in R programming.
However, I don't fully agree with this view!
I think loops have several advantages, but there are also some drawbacks worth considering.
Advantages of loops:
✅ Intuitive and straightforward way to perform repetitive tasks.
✅ Allow step-by-step execution with full control over each iteration.
✅ Flexible enough to handle complex operations and conditional logic.
✅ Loop performance in R has improved considerably over the years.
Drawbacks of loops:
❌ Can require more code than alternative approaches.
❌ May be slower than vectorized operations, especially when poorly implemented.
❌ Nested loops can become difficult to read and maintain.
❌ May require careful handling of counters, conditions, and stopping criteria.
Of course, R also provides excellent alternatives, including vectorized operations, the apply() family of functions, and the purrr package. These approaches can often make code shorter, easier to read, and more efficient.
However, I don't think this automatically makes traditional loops a bad choice. In my opinion, it's worth understanding both loops and their alternatives and choosing the approach that works best for the specific task.
What's your opinion? Should loops generally be avoided in R, or do you think they still have their place?
I've released a new Statistics Globe Hub module covering loops and their alternatives, including practical R code examples and exercises: statisticsglobe.com/hub

The tidyplots package is an excellent tool for creating data visualizations in R. But the package itself is not the only highlight. It also comes with exceptionally well-written documentation.
Jan Broder Engler, the developer of tidyplots, has not only created the package but also written a full paper that explains how to use it in practice. The tidyplots paper is a great example of how package documentation can be done well. It clearly introduces the main ideas behind the package and shows how complex visualizations can be created with concise and readable code.
Throughout the paper, the tidyplots workflow is explained step by step. It shows how the package builds on ggplot2 while adding convenient helper functions and a tidyverse-style syntax. This approach makes it easier to create clean and consistent plots without writing long and complicated ggplot2 code.
Another strong aspect of the paper is the combination of explanations and practical examples. This makes it easy to follow along and understand how different types of visualizations are created while keeping the syntax consistent across tasks.
If you want to improve your data visualization workflow in R, the tidyplots paper is definitely worth reading. You can find it here: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/…

🦆 Announcing DuckDB 2.0.0 LTS “Cinnamon Teal”
We are proud to release DuckDB 2.0.0, named after the cinnamon teal (Spatula cyanoptera), a striking reddish-brown duck found in the western Americas. 🌎
DuckDB 2.0.0 is the biggest DuckDB feature release so far. It ships a polished version of the Quack protocol, which turns DuckDB into a full-fledged server. It improves performance and lowers costs through supporting asynchronous I/O, a first-class VARIANT type, and a dedicated “agent mode”. It also empowers extension developers with a new SQL parser that allows adding new statements, clauses, and keywords, a new API to build on, and a new mechanism to distribute extensions more easily.
In our announcement blog post, we summarize the highlights and then walk through the key changes and give guidance on how to migrate to 2.0. For the complete release notes, see the release page on GitHub.
