If these intense, repeated heatwaves become more common as we see more climate change, then we’re going to need government support to improve our buildings further, install more aircon and help to cover the increased costs of keeping our homes cool in the summer. #heatwave
🚨The PM is chairing an emergency Cobra meeting today over extreme heat, wildfires and drought. The Met Office says this could be the UK's hottest summer on record.
Nearly 2,900 people have already died from heat this year in May and June alone, almost double the number for the whole of last summer.
The same homes that are too cold and dangerous in winter are now too hot and dangerous in summer. The Climate Change Committee says 92% of homes could overheat, and the poorest areas are seven times more at risk than the rest.
This is costing the NHS £2.5 billion a year and it's costing lives. We need home upgrades, a proper heat strategy, and a permanent social tariff so nobody has to choose between paying the bills and staying safe.
