J’accuse! I’ve seen a number of tweets from one particularly interested follower about a bookshop that apparently was at Battle of Ideas. I didn’t go to the bookshop, but let’s unpick it, shall we? 1/n

Hilarious. The use of fugly old Corporate Memphis spread exactly because of this tendency of idpol fanatics to faint with outrage at the drop of a hat.
Companies got more and more averse to depicting humans in case they were The Wrong Kind Of Human. (Because identity politics is not at all nihilistic or bleak.)
And we've now moved so far into Abstract Blob world that this bald man looking over his shoulder has been mistaken for (I presume) a veiled woman.
(Personally, I think it's actually Chairman Mao and a disgusting assault on Chinese communists. I'm OUTRAGED I tell you.)
Anyway, now that even the wibbly-wobbly blue-blob humans are causing outrage, maybe we can just get back to beautiful, artful illustration. It's been 10 goddam years since FB shunted us all into their manky old Alegria world. Let's move on.

The idea that we would be attacked and removed for speech some fans disagree with is a hallmark of authoritarianism, pure and simple. And it's growing in America. You don't have to be on our side of the girls' sports issue to see the danger. As a conservative in Seattle, I am surrounded every single day by signs and beliefs I disagree with. Never once have I considered hurting someone or trying to silence them. This is the kind of activity and ideology that will destroy our country if we don't resist it.

During WW2, London's underground transport system occasionally suffered blackouts. This is Henry Carr’s scene of Piccadilly Circus at night in 1942 - the downlight cast from a single lamp makes the picture particularly atmospheric.

A gem of a drawing (crayon and chalk) from around 1820 by the Suffolk artist Henry Bright. It's titled 'Symphony,' and was made forty years before Whistler began to name his works with the language of music.

After 18 years in children’s services, I find this deeply troubling, repeated safeguarding warnings, vulnerable children put at risk, and a doctor who says she was silenced for speaking up. This demands answers. Protecting children must be the state’s first duty. 👇🏽
🚨Hilary Cass has called for an independent inquiry into how Brighton GPs were allowed to prescribe cross-sex hormones to children as young as 12.“There urgently needs to be an investigation of why every system that should have protected children, young people, and indeed young adults has failed,” she told me.
The employment tribunal between Dr Sarah Redvers and NHS Sussex has highlighted how regulators and the NHS collectively failed to stop prescribing of puberty blockers and hormones against national guidelines - for years - and how instead the person raising concerns was accused of transphobia and herself investigated.
Dr Redvers sat down with me for her only newspaper interview about her treatment in a scandal which, Cass now says, “dwarfs” that of the Tavistock’s GIDS.

APOLOGIES IN ADVANCE TO ANY TENANTS READING THIS, BUT I’M NOT STAYING QUIET.
I’ve housed you for four years at $1,750 a month. You’ve never been late. You’ve never trashed it. You’ve been a solid tenant. Then I sent the renewal: rent’s going up $275.
YES.
You’ve paid me almost $84,000 over four years. That money covered the mortgage (which I’m still on the hook for if anything goes wrong), property taxes that keep rising, insurance premiums that have jumped hard, maintenance and repairs that cost more every year, and all the other costs of keeping the place habitable and legal.
The equity and any portfolio growth come from the capital I put in, the risk I took, and the fact that I own the asset, not from the rent check itself.
You’re the one writing the check every month for the right to live there. At the end of it, you own nothing because you didn’t buy it, finance it, or take on the ownership risks. I did. If the roof fails, the HVAC dies, a pipe bursts, taxes go up again, insurance spikes, or you leave and it sits vacant, that’s on me.
A $275 increase isn’t “because the market lets me.” It’s because the costs of providing the housing have gone up, insurance, taxes, labor, materials, compliance.
Recent data shows typical homeowners paying ~$1,380 a month just in maintenance, taxes, and insurance on top of the mortgage, with insurance up sharply over the last several years.
Apartment owners have been keeping only about 11 cents of every rent dollar after debt service, operations, taxes, and the rest.
Expenses have often risen faster than rents.
Stop treating landlords like a free housing subscription that never has rising costs. The rent pays for the use of the property and the service of ownership. The equity belongs to the person who bought it and bears the risk.
If you want a version where some of the money eventually becomes yours, buy your own home.
APOLOGIES IN ADVANCE TO ANY LANDLORDS READING THIS, BUT I'M NOT STAYING QUIET.
I just sent $1,750 in rent for a place I've lived in for four years. Never late. Never trashed it. Never once missed a payment.
Then the renewal email landed: rent's going up another $275 a month.
NO.
You've pulled almost $84,000 out of me over four years. That money paid your mortgage down, built your equity, funded your portfolio. And my reward for being the reliable tenant you never had to chase for rent is a bigger bill, simply because the market lets you charge one.
I'm the one writing the check every month, and at the end of all of it, I own nothing. Not a square foot of it.
If I'm covering your mortgage payment and then some, every single month, there should be a version of this where some of that money eventually becomes mine.
Stop treating good tenants like a subscription service you get to raise the price on whenever you feel like it.

Janice Turner in the Times, serves it cold to Sally Rooney.
"Rooney’s work brims with jaded ennui: achievement is empty, love problematic, sex just a serotonin blip before postcoital gloom. Beautiful World, Where Are You? whines the title of her third novel. I’ve met young Ukrainians under nightly Russian drone attack who find more laughter and joy in life than her privileged, Mogadoned nihilists.
The longing to feel something — anything — defines her characters and her own life. But now, at 35, Rooney has found meaning at last. The cause of Palestine is “to join in something greater than our selves, to participate in some small way in a struggle for human liberation”. Gaza is not about the suffering of a people but Rooney’s self-realisation."

If you are an acclaimed, voice-of-a-generation novelist there are infinite practical ways to deploy your fame and money to aid Gaza’s hungry, injured and displaced. But Rooney has chosen one that gives her the ultimate prize: pain-free public martyrdom.

Very good report from the BBC, with well-handled clarifications. Changed days! I don't know if Dr Redver is on here, but she has my solidarity. People who should have had her back seem to have betrayed her. I hate this. Just another thing the TERFs were right about, all along.
