After changing my profile picture on Douyin, the Chinese cousin of TikTok, to the cover of "Surveillance State," a book co-written w/@joshchin. It took the app less than 5 mins to revert to my old profile photo. I concluded: Tencent & ByteDance's censorship is the most stringent.
1/ After @akanakis pointed out that the cover of Surveillance State was censored on Wechat, I quickly changed the profile pictures on my Wechat, Weibo, Zhihu, Taobao account to see what happened. After a few mins, our book cover was censored on Wechat and stayed up on the rest.

Carlos and his wife Nora and I and Patrick Barta and David Blend and a few others used to do a monthly mixed CD club. I remember at a Sharon Jones concert in Brooklyn Nora and Carlos handed out their CD. It was called “Songs that make you wish you were a chick.” Need to find it.

Greetings from @WSJ China bureau. Fresh out the oven, a big read from the incomparable @Lingling_Wei on how Xi Jinping is leaning on the state sector more than ever during the coronavirus pandemic—hastening China's retreat from a market-oriented economy.

She is one of the best reporters to have covered modern China. The loss of her astute economic and financial coverage, like the loss of other insightful journalism by US reporters, sets back not only the world's understanding of China but China's own true understanding of itself.
