A brilliant essay on Amy Winehouse's "Back in Black" on its 20th anniversary.
"At 23, Winehouse sang with the wisdom and self awareness of someone thrice her age. She talks about heartache and mistreatment by men with a sense of inevitability, like a scientist outlining the laws of physics or an elder passing down folkloric knowledge: This is how it is, it’s how it always will be.
And yet, the genius of her music is that, candid as she is, she’s never didactic or emotionally removed. These songs are ablaze with desire: to hold on to something that cannot work, to believe that, maybe, this time will be different."

been discouraged by the conversation about YCSE. people who left the movie feeling saddened that elizabeth holmes is in prison are not "marks." they are people who glimpsed how cruel prison is even at its most palatable, even when used to cage the least sympathetic person
for bkmag, wrote about you can see everything as a movie about prison bkmag.com/2026/10/21/you-can…

A retrospective on Aphex Twin's divisive masterpiece "Druqks" on its 25th anniversary.
The experiments on the disklavier, its path to TikTok fame, the alternation of tender moments & bangers, the Kanye sample, the digital premonitions.

The definitive Kurtis Blow interview – including the time Betty Shabazz saved his life.
Ahead of receiving a Hip Hop Grandmaster Award this weekend from the Paid in Full Foundation, @paulxt spoke to hip-hop's first solo star about his early days in Harlem, his first raps, becoming the house DJ at Smalls Paradise, and how he became a licensed minister.

Included in here is the first rap Kurtis Blow ever wrote, which was inspired by The Crucible
Today at the magazine, I have the incredible honor of speaking at length with Kurtis Blow, who tells me about his upbringing in Harlem—including having his life saved by Malcolm X's wife!—and becoming rap's first major label star powmag.net/p/kurtis-blow-rem…

yeah the guy who wants the AI porn of his wife to be visually perfect in case he can find a way to profit off of it is exactly who i want raising those kids
in all seriousness regarding Billy, despite what people may think after watching the doc, i don’t think enough attention was given to the fact that he has effectively become a single father
he’s not only responsible for raising the children alone, but also navigating the emotional and practical difficulties of having a spouse who is incarcerated
i think he deserves far more credit for holding the two young children together
