it has brought me no pleasure to cover the Folarin Balogun red card suspension so I wrote about how FIFA's decision-making mars the #USMNT's chance at making history today -- and the World Cup as a whole

Lionel Messi may have opted out of the Ballon d'Or ceremony but worry not, he did not opt out of making sartorial … choices … at the *checks notes* Messi Cup, naturally in partnership with *checks notes again* Messi Fragrances
¡LA SONRISA DE MESSI! La felicidad de Leo, que disfruta de una nueva edición de la Messi Cup.

NEW:
the people came to see Lionel Messi; instead, they saw Inter Miam’s hopes of retaining MLS Cup wane — all while catching a glimpse of Adri Mehmeti
reflections from another routine MLS game in the Play Your Kids era

no surprise but #RBNY’s Michael Bradley waxed poetic about Adri Mehmeti last night, the player’s maturity a standout feature
“I didn't know coming into the season what exactly it was going to mean for Adri … We have put a lot on Adri's plate … and he doesn't bat an eye”
hello from Sports Illustrated Stadium, where many (including Kenan Thompson) have sojourned to see Lionel Messi
he isn’t starting after a midweek trip to Spain so I’ll give it seven minutes before a “We want Messi” chant breaks out
NEW:
the #USWNT’s attacking depth remains their strength, Ashley Sanchez and Mallory Swanson bailing them out on another uneven day against Spain
Emma Hayes: “The importance is the whole pack … Gone are the days of a [default starting] 11”

#USWNT’s Ashley Sanchez after first international start in two years:
“I, defensively, could do a little bit better, so I think for me, that's my biggest takeaway. I'm really happy with the goal, but I think it did feel comfortable on the field with the connections that I have”
#USWNT’s Emma Hayes on Mallory Swanson:
“She missed a big chance. It reminded me of the Olympic gold medal moment. I was like, 'This is the one player you want in this position,' and she lifted it, but she didn't miss the second one. That's what you have to do at this level”
#USWNT’s Emma Hayes praises Ashley Sanchez for a number of things, including her ability to “translate” knowledge and her experience
#USWNT’s Emma Hayes:
“I admired the fearlessness of the performance of the second half”
post-match press conference with #USWNT’s Emma Hayes clocks in at eight minutes and she exits the room going, “I’m tired,” which is very, very relatable
Hello from Subaru Park, where they went all out with the fireworks but then again, how often do the world’s best teams play?
Twice in the span of four days, you might answer! Anyway, play’s underway between the #USWNT and Spain
#USWNT 2, Spain 2
the U.S. have their equalizer courtesy of Mallory Swanson, who scores her first international goal since going on maternity leave (and in only her second game since returning)
FT: #USWNT 2. Spain 2
they’re blasting Natasha Bedingfield’s “Unwritten” at Subaru Park and I fear I’ve missed an opportunity to write that today is where both teams’ World Cup book begins because I still feel that we’ll point back to these games often for the next eight months
