Another great piece. "The film’s interviewees are depicted as mere “cogs” in a system that turns good progressive educated, non-Arab-hating gods in the sky into murderers. This framing is dangerous. Focusing on the machinery of war... completely misses the point."

No Canadian CIA. Mark Carney’s new National Security Strategy calls for increased intelligence capacities. Too many public resources are already devoted to secretive, US-aligned, elements of Canada’s government. Released on Thursday, the National Security Strategy pledges to “Modernise Canada’s intelligence capabilities to anticipate and counter emerging threats: Our ability to collect, analyse, and leverage intelligence, together with our partners, ensures we are prepared to tackle emerging threats. Canada will strengthen our sovereign intelligence capabilities, deepen and diversify our intelligence partnerships, and modernise Canada’s intelligence enterprise by updating authorities to reflect evolving threats and technologies while safeguarding Canadians’ rights.” There’s some suggestion that they might set up a Canadian version of the (foreign focused) US CIA or British MI6. A senior federal official told CBC, “I don't think we’re on the verge of announcing a separate agency that would be akin to the CIA or MI6. But at the same time we’re looking at the capabilities that our intelligence agencies have and making sure that they are fit for purpose and for the challenges that we face today.” Unlike CIA or MI6, the Canadian Security Intelligence Service is focused domestically. With an announced budget of a billion dollars year, CSIS is Canada’s best-known agency. Its close collaborator, the Communication Security Establishment (CSE), is largely foreign-focused. Canada’s NSA has 3,800 employees and an annual budget over $1 billion. It was recently reported that Ottawa plans to spend $1.85 billion to construct a new CSE data centre in Ottawa. The capacities of CSE and CSIS put Canada among the best equipped intelligence operators in the world. According to different assessments, Canada’s intelligence apparatus is often listed around the tenth most sophisticated after the US, Israel, UK, Russia, China, India, Pakistan, Germany and France. Besides CSIS and CSE, Canada’s military has vast intelligence gathering capacities. Thousands work in intelligence and cyber warfare, but little is known about their operations since there is no external oversight. The Canadian Forces Intelligence Command (CFINTCOM) carries out a wide range of intelligence activities. According to the government’s 2017 Defence Policy review, “CFINTCOM is the only entity within the Government of Canada that employs the full spectrum of intelligence collection capabilities while providing multi-source analysis.” Comprised of five units, CFINTCOM includes the Canadian Forces Joint Imagery Centre (providing imagery intelligence), Joint Meteorological Centre (providing weather related information to support CF operations), Mapping and Charting Establishment (providing geospatial information and geomatics), Canadian Forces National Counter-Intelligence Unit (which identifies and investigates threats by foreign intelligence services) and Joint Task Force X (human intelligence). Global Affairs also has its own intelligence operations. In a highly revealing comment in an article focused on Canada spying in Cuba, former assistant director of operations at CSIS, Andy Ellis, recently told the Globe and Mail that officials at Global Affairs Canada’s elite Global Security Reporting Program “would take risks that nobody else would do. They would do whatever the CIA asked them to do. [The CIA] absolutely owned them.” Some of the discussion of the National Security Strategy has focused on the need to spend more on intelligence to counter Donald Trump’s belligerence. In “Ottawa urged to boost sovereign intelligence assessments to reduce reliance on U.S.” the Globe and Mail quoted Vincent Rigby, a national security adviser to former prime minister Justin Trudeau, arguing this position. But Rigby is also quoted by the Globe saying, “should Canada’s relationship with the U.S. ‘ever return to some semblance of normalcy’ its increased assessment capacity would be valued by members of the Five Eyes,” which is the massive US/UK/Canada/Australia/New Zealand intelligence sharing arrangement. Is there any evidence that CSE, CSIS and others have reduced the flow of intel to the US-dominated Five Eyes? Is Rigby calling to pause Canadian participation in the Five Eyes until Trump is gone? Even if that took place, CSE has extensive direct ties to the NSA and Canada would still be part of NORAD and NATO with the US. Additionally, the Canadian forces have various agreements with the US military on information sharing. It’s more fundamental than just their intelligence agencies close ties to their US counterparts. Even if Canada’s intelligence apparatus were to become independent of the US, it’s still part of an imperialistic state apparatus. Economic espionage is a significant component of CSE’s focus with the CCPA Monitor labelling it the “espionage arm of corporate Canada”. As part of NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden’s 2013 revelations the UK Guardian reported: “[CSE] has participated in secret meetings in Ottawa where Canadian security agencies briefed energy corporations. Claims of spying on the [Brazilian mining and energy] ministry by CSEC come amid the Canadian government’s increasingly aggressive promotion of resource corporations at home and abroad, including unprecedented surveillance and intelligence sharing with companies. According to freedom of information documents obtained by the Guardian, the meetings — conducted twice a year since 2005 — involved federal ministries, spy and police agencies, and representatives from scores of companies who obtained high-level security clearance.” Carney’s push to boost the intelligence apparatus should be opposed. We don’t need or want a Canadian CIA.

Israel is a cancerous tumor that destroys humanity.
Under pressure from Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the Trump administration may be within days of launching a nuclear strike on Iran. The target would be Pickax Mountain in central Iran, where Israeli intelligence claims the Iranian government has restarted its nuclear enrichment program. No conventional weapon in the American arsenal can penetrate 300 feet of solid granite to destroy the tunnels where enrichment is supposedly taking place. The only military option is a nuclear strike. Netanyahu has been pushing hard for one. “Bibi calls Trump about it every day,” says an informed observer. Netanyahu is cornered and desperate. After last week’s election results, he can’t form a government unless Trump intervenes directly in Israeli politics and brokers a deal with other parties that gives Netanyahu 61 seats in the Knesset. Otherwise, he is out as prime minister and on his way to ignominy, investigations and possibly jail. Netanyahu must stay close to Trump. He needs this war. To that end, he’s applied maximum pressure to his closest allies in the administration, including Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and CENTCOM commander Brad Cooper. Both oppose a negotiated settlement to the war they’ve so grievously mismanaged; both are pushing to restart major combat operations. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and CIA director John Ratcliffe are also following Netanyahu’s lead, as are leaders of the Democratic Party. In a recent meeting on the subject, former president Barack Obama said he opposes the current Iran peace deal being drafted in Doha. The rest of America’s longtime allies in the Middle East are terrified by the prospect of more war. On September 27th, Netanyahu flew secretly to Abu Dhabi to enlist the UAE in his lobbying effort for a final attack on Iran. The Emiratis refused. After eight months of conflict, Gulf economies are teetering. So are global energy and fertilizer markets. They won’t recover soon. Globally, there are a total of about 850 supertankers used to transport oil from producers to the rest of the world. In October alone, 11 of them were badly damaged in Hormuz. At this pace, a global depression is imminent. A nuclear strike would radically accelerate the destruction. Fallout from a ground explosion at Pickax Mountain would contaminate the Persian Gulf, poisoning the water supply for 100 million people. And those are just some of the immediate consequences for the region. The rest of the world is every bit as exposed. No country other than the United States has ever used a nuclear weapon in war. Some would like to. An American nuclear attack on Iran would set a new precedent. The Russians have already told at least two other governments that an American nuclear strike on Iran would free them to use nuclear weapons against Ukraine. Pakistan and India would be tempted to do the same against each other, as would North Korea against Seoul. After the first nuclear strike, World War Three is inevitable. That war would be short and final. We’ve been sleepwalking toward this moment for months. Since February, the administration has quietly rewritten America’s nuclear doctrine to make first use of so-called “battlefield nukes” easier and therefore more likely. No one in Washington in either party seems bothered by this. Now we’re on the brink of it. Close observers say Trump is likely to decide by next weekend whether or not to use nuclear weapons. That would be November 7, six days from now. To his credit, he’s hesitating. At the moment, Trump is listening to his vice president, JD Vance, and to his envoy and friend Steve Witkoff, both of whom argue a deal with Iran can be made. They’re right, though it won’t be simple. The Iranians are famously frustrating to negotiate with under any circumstances, and elements of that government have become more radical since Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and his family were killed in February. After decades of isolation, even relatively moderate Iranian leaders seem confused by how decisions are made in the West. (There is a widespread belief in Tehran, for example, that the United States government controls Israel.) But overall, people who have spoken to decision-makers in Iran say there is consensus there that more war is bad for everyone and a deal is worth making. One group that hasn’t been consulted so far is the global population — the hundreds of millions of people who will be killed along with their children if Trump is pushed by Netanyahu into launching a nuclear strike next week. Now would be the time for them to speak up.

Beit Lahia’s fertile land has sustained generations of Palestinians. Even after the occupation has destroyed farms, uprooted trees, and devastated fields, the rich soil still holds life. Help now: chuffed.org/project/113222-t… Here, mint grows - and our team was happy to take some home for their tea!! A small joy from the land that has always nourished its people. In the distance, the occupation’s tanks are visible. Imagine tending your land, or simply picking mint, beneath their watch. May these fields always sustain their community. May our people live to cultivate them in freedom, harvesting everything this generous land can give. Thank God for the bounty of Palestine. The War Propaganda Is Even Dumber This Time As CENTCOM meets with Trump to plan more Iran strikes, the war propaganda is dumber than it has ever been. Fox News is running stories about an Iranian “plot” to kill US military personnel in the middle east, as though a country planning ways to defend itself from hostile attackers is some sinister new development. CBC ran a completely evidence-free report alleging that Iran has been paying gunmen to shoot bullets into empty buildings in Toronto, Canada. One of the dumbest things we are asked to believe about Iran is that it keeps taking time away from defending itself against US-Israeli aggressions in order to orchestrate random acts of arson and vandalism in mid-power western states for no discernible benefit to its strategic interests. Former Israeli military intelligence officer Mordechai Kedar went on Piers Morgan to call Iran an “artificial state”, saying “its fate is to be dismantled, is to be shattered to pieces, as it should have been from the beginning.” Calling one of the world’s oldest civilizations an “artificial state” from inside a country that’s younger than Mick Jagger and has been propped up by nonstop western military aggression throughout 100 percent of its existence is, uh, certainly a choice. Under Trump, the war propagandists don’t even need to try anymore. He’s just going to inflict all sorts of horrors upon the middle east and Latin America with blunt-force military aggression, and then when he leaves office they’re going to act like he’s carrying all the sins of the US empire with him on his back. ❖ British police arrested 325 people on terrorism charges for protesting in support of the proscribed activist group Palestine Action on Saturday. Sky News reports that 94 percent of all terrorism arrests this year have been made because of support for Palestine Action. “There were 3,867 arrests for suspected terrorist activity in the year to June, of which 94% were linked to supporting the group,” Sky News reports, adding, “In the previous 12-month period, before the ban came into force, 234 terror arrests were made.” Drop bombs on buildings full of children and the UK will call you an ally. Express support for activists who try to stop those bombs and the UK will call you a terrorist. ❖ I fucking, fucking, FUCKING HATE writing about “antisemitism”. I am so motherfucking SICK of it. I hate the word. I hate the rapey, gaslighting way all western institutions are constantly forcing this fake narrative down our throats that opposing genocide and apartheid and crazy wars means you secretly hate some random tiny religious group. Hate it, hate it, HATE it. But I have to keep writing about it, because if you let them control the narrative it just takes over and becomes the consensus reality. So essay after essay after motherfucking essay I find myself writing “Uh no actually it’s not a hate crime to say you shouldn’t drop military explosives on buildings full of children” like a fucking moron, over and over and over again. These freaks make me fucking sick. I hate the way they’re constantly trying to stick their gross, rapey fingers into our minds and convince us we think things we don’t think and feel things we don’t feel. They never stop. They’re like a cloud of gnats on a humid summer day constantly trying to fly into your nose, mouth and eyes. You swat them away and they’re back an instant later, swarming, suffocating. Pieces of shit. Fucking disgusting, evil scumbags. ❖ No one supports Israel on principle. It’s always because they think they’re getting something out of it. Career advancement. A place in Heaven. Real estate in Tel Aviv. Acceptance from their family. Approval from their peers. The presidency of the United States. People support Palestine because they sincerely believe it’s the right thing to do, but Israel supporters always believe they’re personally getting something out of it. It may have been possible for someone to sincerely believe Israel was on the right side of history once upon a time, but in 2026 nobody honestly thinks that. There’s always something in it for them. Always some skin in the game. In that sense, they’re just plunderers. They’re taking from an abused population in order to get something for themselves. They’re throwing their support behind a genocidal settler-colonialist project in exchange for some personal reward in the same way vikings used to raid coastal towns and steal everything they had. Pretty evil if you think about it. ❖ I hear people say things like, “I don’t understand why they’re pushing AI so hard when we can all see it’s making everything worse.” That’s because it’s not being marketed to you; it’s being marketed to governments and plutocrats. They’re the real target audience for these products, not you. You are not receiving the real sales pitch for AI, because the real sales pitch would not appeal to your sensibilities. The real sales pitch for AI isn’t “Hey check out this product, it makes some web searches slightly easier and it can maybe write your emails for you.” The real sales pitch for AI is “This product allows you to surveil the entire population of your country. It can be built into autonomous surveillance drones and killing machines. It can allow you to monitor and control every aspect of your society. It can reverse the decentralization of information brought on by the internet age. It can take away the collective bargaining power of workers and give you the skilled services your company requires. It can nullify strikes, civil disobedience, and even full-scale revolutions, and lock humanity into your capitalist dystopia forever.” That’s the real sales pitch. It doesn’t sound appealing to any normal person, but it makes sense when you remember who these technologies are really being sold to, and why. ❖ Reading by Tim Foley:

This is 2 days ago…Did you think there was a ceasefire? Did you think the bombing had ended? Did you think the displacement was over? Urgent support needed: chuffed.org/project/113222-t… These children, forced from their beds in the middle of the night just 2 DAYS AGO, would tell you otherwise. Walking through the darkness, leaving their homes behind, afraid of what comes next, if their families will be killed - and whether there will be a home to return to, family members to see again. This is following the targeting of the Al-Madhoun family home in Saftawi, north of Gaza City, children describe a fear that follows them everywhere. Into their beds. Into the streets. Into every thought about tomorrow. For a fourth year, the occupation continues to steal their childhoods. Do not let the word “ceasefire” make these children invisible. Hear them. Share their testimonies. Keep demanding an end to this genocide. They have a right to live, to remain in their homes, and to grow up in a free Palestine. And The Sameer Project stands by them.
