Retired from iTech Solutions Group, but still speaking about IBM i, being a Lifetime IBM Champion, and advocating for the IBM i community. Ready for a comeback,

Being an IBM Champion isn't a product award. It's recognition for giving your knowledge away freely. Honored to be the first Power Systems Lifetime Champion and even more honored by the company I get to keep. On my way to Atlanta. #IBMChampion #ibmi

Heading to #IBMTechXchange in Atlanta. The sessions are great, but the people are why I go. The IBM Champions are some of the most generous folks I know — the ones who answer the 11pm email and share the fix including the parts that made them look bad. Grateful to be one of them. #IBMi

What does it take to be an IBM Champion? Not working at IBM. Not buying the most product. It's recognition for giving — teaching, speaking, mentoring, showing up for the community year after year. Proud to be a Lifetime Champion. Prouder of the people I share it with. #IBMChampion #IBMTechXchange

Three months with the Power11 S1112. Closing thoughts. This machine is amazing; it meets and exceeds the needs of the P05 customer. What IBM fixed: the memory problem that has held back the P05 software tier for four generations. Order 128GB and your IBM i partitions get the full 64, instead of the 50 to 52 we have all quietly tolerated. What IBM improved: memory bandwidth, storage capacity up to 12.8TB of NVMe (6.4TB usable with mirroring), and real control over power and performance with modes you can change on the fly. What IBM got right that nobody will put on a slide: it installs in under two hours, and the eBMC just worked with my HMC the first time. The entry customer is usually a one-person IT department. Every hour of install complexity comes directly out of that person's life. Use LAN Console, just as simple. What I would tell a customer sizing one: order more memory than you think you need, because you now actually get to use it. Populate the NVMe bays and mirror. Think about whether you want AIX or Linux partitions alongside, because the memory above 64GB is genuinely useful to them. My honest prediction, and I said this to IBM in my beta feedback: this becomes the new standard in Power for the entry customer, and every P05 software tier customer is going to want to be on one. I have been working with these machines since they were AS/400s, and I have always wanted more memory and storage on the entry machines. Not this time. Happy to answer questions from anyone evaluating one. Three months of hands-on beats a spec sheet, and I would rather the community get the real answers. #IBMi #Power11 #IBMPower #AS400 #IBMCHAMPION

And every year you wait, the migration you are avoiding gets a little bigger, a little more complicated, and a little more difficult. The S1112 runs #IBMI 7.4, 7.5, and 7.6. I fully expect IBMi next and next+1. I don't sell these anymore. I just spent two months on one and I'd tell my mother to move. #Power11 #IBMCHAMPION

Straight question for anyone still running a P10 or older P9 in the P05 tier: What are you actually waiting for? Hardware at or near end of support. 12-14GB of memory going to firmware you paid for. Won't run the IBM i releases you're going to need. #IBMi

I've been disappointed by entry Power machines before. Not this time with the S1112. #IBMi #Power11

There's a power mode for everyone with the S1112. Chasing cycles, watching the power bill, or wanting predictability above all. Best part is that it's immediate. Set it, run your workload, watch, change your mind. Cheapest performance work you'll ever do. #IBMi #Power11

The S1112 has 3 modes: Maximum performance — frequency varies, system reaches max frequency using thermal/energy headroom from idle cores and lighter workloads. Energy efficient — same idea, targets mid-frequency. Maximum energy saver — fixed low frequency regardless of workload. Predictable, cheaper to run. Pick the one for your #IBMi workload.

The IBM Power11 S1112 feature I didn't expect to enjoy this much: You can change the machine's power mode (which effects the speed of the chip and electrical usage), and it takes effect immediately. No restart. #IBMi

"Future proof" is a phrase I normally can't stand. The S1112 runs #IBMi 7.4, 7.5, and 7.6 and will run what comes next. This time it's earned.

Second thing on S1112, and it's not the one people talk about: Power10 and Power11 entry machines both use DDR5 DDIMM. The difference is bandwidth. Power11's memory subsystem gets substantially more out of the same generation of memory. Which is why "it feels fast" is technically about bandwidth, not DDR5. What that buys #IBMi : Db2 work, complex SQL, batch programs, Java. Anything moving data rather than just computing on it. Which is most of what our systems do all day. #IBMi

Previous P05 software tier machines: FSP firmware took its cut off the top. Order 64, see ~50-52 in your #IBMi partitions. Invisible on the order. Very visible in a memory pool. S1112: order 128, get all 64. That's the whole trick. #IBMPOWER
73
More on S1112 memory, because this is the number that should drive the decision. 512GB max, DDR5 DDIMM. #IBMi partitions use 64GB. AIX/Linux partitions can use the rest, so on a mixed box nothing's wasted.

The green screen didn't cost you the young #IBMI hire. Not offering to teach them did.

Order 128GB in an IBM S1112 and your IBM i partitions get the full 64. On a P9 or P10 you ordered 64GB and got about 51 usable after FSP usage. This is the best part of the announcement. #IBMi

I expected a competent entry-level P05 software-tier machine, that is not what I received. I received much much more. More this week on memory bandwidth, power modes, and what it means if you're still on a P9. #IBMi #Power11 #IBMPOWER #IBMCHAMPION
