Scientists call these experiences "Lilliputian hallucinations," and similar visions have also been documented in certain neurological conditions. But here's what makes this discovery even stranger. People living thousands of miles apart have reported remarkably similar visions! Reports of these strange mushroom experiences go back to 1934 in Papua New Guinea. Decades later, people in China's Yunnan province described similar encounters. Then researchers learned that Indigenous communities in the Philippines had their own accounts of seeing miniature people after eating wild mushrooms. Domnauer and his colleagues used DNA sequencing to confirm that the mushrooms linked to these visions in China and the Philippines were the same species. Because the really fascinating question is why people from completely different cultures can experience such strangely similar visions of miniature human beings.
