Israeli President Isaac Herzog has tasked Gadi Eisenkot, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s main political rival, with forming the next government.
Eisenkot has 28 days, with a possible two-week extension, to build a coalition. His Yashar party won 21 seats, while his opposition bloc has 48, short of the 61 needed for a majority.
One option is to bring in the Arab parties, which won a record 19 seats combined, or form a minority government with their outside support.
