Inspired by the work that companies like @planet are doing to unlock the value of satellite imagery, I've waded into the world of earth observation data, and have jotted down some thoughts on how it can be incorporated into research in inclusive finance. medium.com/@paulgubbins/expl…

Just finished reading this and it is phenomenal! While the book is often lighthearted, @KevinFedarko treats his subject, the grand canyon, its geology, its people and history with great care and respect. The book is also deeply personal, I really appreciated the honest…
Let me once again thank the @nytimes for their marvelous coverage of this book, for which I am so deeply grateful.

… introspection as Kevin contemplates the relationship between himself, people native to the canyon, the natural landscape and the journey itself. The book has left a deep impression of the Grand Canyon and its wonders in my mind!

This looks very interesting! With vast amounts of geospatial data at our fingertips, seems like earth observation is an area ripe for good AI tools to help people monitor and understand our dynamic planet as well as measure a range of impacts.

The latest series of @EmpirePodUK tracing the rise, fall and legacy of the Persian empire is extraordinary. @Dalrymple and @tweeter_anita animate the map and events of antiquity so well and infuse the retelling of history with a lot of joy and humour.

I'm now so hooked on this period I'm considering purchasing a hardcover version of Herodotus' histories! Any translation recommendations are welcome!

@planet Here is an idea for an application to support research: I provide point coordinates of sampled economic units (such as households, small businesses), the API returns environmental/exposure variables going back X months, for a radius of X km around each unit.

There could be a menu of environmental variables to select from: eg. NDVI, soil moisture, percent of surface area by land cover type, population density + an ability to select the sample statistic that aggregates across pixels (e.g. mean, median). Does something like this exist?

Love seeing this story on the significance of Africa's burgeoning youth demographic in the @nytimes that combines data with personal stories bringing to life what this trend might mean for the region & the world: nytimes.com/interactive/2023…

Wow! This is amazing AI technology that vastly reduces the time and complexity of gleaning insights from satellite imagery. Use cases for this seem endless.
Did you miss our webinar with @Planet Federal, "Change Detection for Active Investigations?" Watch the recording to learn how #RAIC's instant detection + Planet's Earth observation archive = a new world of insights. content.planet.com/c/planet-…

Fascinating conversation with one of the leading AI scientists behind ChatGPT. The discussion starting around min 20 made me consider how LLMs might be more than statistical machines.
This talk with the CEO of NVIDIA and @OpenAI cofounder @ilyasut is great. There's so many frantic opinions right now, it's refreshing to hear someone so grounded. This point about language being a projection of the world is a fantastic rebuttal to the 'just predicting' argument

@ilyasut argues that for an LLM to be scary accurate in predicting the "next word" in a text string implies that that model must be learning or reasoning about structure and relationships in the broader world at some level.

Wow. Clearly a major leap in the utility of search. I really like that you can ask it to organize information into tables…

This was a great webinar highlighting the findings and applications of the @GlobalFindex data. I found @JMorduch's short reflections (towards the end of the session) on financial resilience particularly thought provoking and useful. Thanks for this @poverty_action!
We want to thank our partners, speakers, & everyone who attended our recent webinar on leveraging the use of #Findex dataset for policy & #research. #ICYMI, you can watch the webinar & download the presentations➡️bit.ly/findexipa Stay tuned for future #Finclusion events!

There is perhaps no other company I am more excited about than @Planet. Their high res earth observation data (in terms of time, space and image quality/spectral range) carries so much potential to unlock applications that address climate, sustainability & development challenges.
It's been a busy week for @Planet at #COP27! We shared details on some exciting partnerships to help further sustainability. Quick summary of the news in this🧵 ⬇️

For example, I could imagine a point not so distant in the future a mobile app for farmers in Kenya powered by @Planet data that could give actionable insights on crop growth/health based on daily monitoring of their specific plot of land.

Statistical learning techniques drawing on both prior year data as well as data from neighbouring plots, could provide additional information useful to farmers, such as optimal planting time, crop yield relative to the potential of the local agro-ecological zone etc.
