Almost seven years ago, I walked away from the Republican Party...and I haven’t looked back. The decision was sharp, clean, and yes, costly in some ways. But never hard. As a veteran, as a citizen, as a human being... I couldn’t stomach what was happening to this country...or the madman hijacking it. I’ve never been threatened by an immigrant. Never been attacked by someone transitioning. Never feared for my safety around people fighting climate change. But I have received death threats... from the people I once called my own. If you’re on the edge...lean in. Step out. Do the right thing. I’m still the same guy. Still living by the oath I took nearly 35 years ago when I raised my right hand. But staying in the Republican Party made that oath impossible to honor. Leaving wasn’t a betrayal. Staying would’ve been.
