the professional photos will come a little later, but for the moment I can confirm that we had a successful Western track of ICMIP in Kauaʻi on June 21 — which means I'm married now! 🎉
the Tea Ceremony track of ICMIP went well — all submissions were accepted without rebuttal! we'll see how the Western track goes in a couple weeks 😉

imagine lacking empathy to the degree that you shoot your 14-month-old dog instead of training it and then defend this as a "painful decision"
I can understand why some people are upset about a 20 year old story of Cricket, one of the working dogs at our ranch, in my upcoming book — No Going Back. The book is filled with many honest stories of my life, good and bad days, challenges, painful decisions, and lessons learned. What I learned from my years of public service, especially leading South Dakota through COVID, is people are looking for leaders who are authentic, willing to learn from the past, and don’t shy away from tough challenges. My hope is anyone reading this book will have an understanding that I always work to make the best decisions I can for the people in my life. The fact is, South Dakota law states that dogs who attack and kill livestock can be put down. Given that Cricket had shown aggressive behavior toward people by biting them, I decided what I did. Whether running the ranch or in politics, I have never passed on my responsibilities to anyone else to handle. Even if it’s hard and painful. I followed the law and was being a responsible parent, dog owner, and neighbor. As I explained in the book, it wasn't easy. But often the easy way isn't the right way.

as a dog owner it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to train the dog. dogs don't just magically behave in a certain way because you really want them to, especially not when they're young and being raised by stupid people.

there are a lot of problems in the world today, but this one requires no nuance to analyze successfully. indefensible...

1/ For several years we've been building Forge, a pedagogically-focused tool to teach formal methods. Here's our first write-up! As the name suggests it's a tribute to Alloy, but we're innovating on several fronts: blog.brownplt.org/2024/04/21… ↵

I was raised in a household that used paper towels for everything and I'm trying so hard to move away from that mindset (not for money reasons; this just happened to make me think of it)
I have the paper towel habit of a much richer man.

I like that she's explicitly saying "this isn't a hate album", since that's what it seems most people assumed it would be
The Tortured Poets Department. An anthology of new works that reflect events, opinions and sentiments from a fleeting and fatalistic moment in time - one that was both sensational and sorrowful in equal measure. This period of the author’s life is now over, the chapter closed and boarded up. There is nothing to avenge, no scores to settle once wounds have healed. And upon further reflection, a good number of them turned out to be self-inflicted. This writer is of the firm belief that our tears become holy in the form of ink on a page. Once we have spoken our saddest story, we can be free of it. And then all that’s left behind is the tortured poetry. THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT is out now: taylor.lnk.to/thetorturedpoe…

1/ Once you look past syntax and "paradigms", many programming languages (Java, Python, Racket, …) share a common semantic core. But students seem to understand it very poorly, which leads to endless confusion (as often seen on here). What to do? ↵ blog.brownplt.org/2024/04/12…

Rance was phenomenally friendly and an excellent person with whom to share in conversation. I will miss him dearly.

these assumptions are hot garbage, sheesh.
Tolkien hated Dune, but was too polite to explain why. When you compare the sensibilities of Tolkien's writings to those of Herbert's, it makes sense why it wouldn't appeal to him. The Lord of the Rings has clearly defined good guys and bad guys and is a story of good triumphing over evil. Dune is about a group of not-so-good people getting revenge on even worse people. The Lord of the Rings has themes lifted from Judeo-Christian theology, and heroes rising up to fulfill their destinies. Dune is very much an anti-religious story about the weaponization of faith and man-made prophets claiming destiny as justification for their grasps at power. The Lord of the Rings is about small people from humble backgrounds facing dangers to protect what they love. Dune is about aristocrats killing aristocrats and using the little people as cannon fodder. The Lord of the Rings is optimistic and ends with the true king being restored to the throne and ushering in a golden age. Dune is pessimistic and ends with a tyrant being replaced by another tyrant.

Godzilla Minus One Minus Color (a limited black-and-white showing of the film) has got to be one of my favorite theater experiences in recent years. the VFX was phenomenal. felt like an old sci-fi B-movie, but better.
Takashi Yamazaki on making the VFX working conditions as comfortable as possible for ‘GODZILLA MINUS ONE’. “We made it more comfortable & cozy; we spent some budget building out a kitchen. We have a designated sushi chef in the kitchen. We really try to avoid long hours, but if you do, it's a very welcoming environment in which to spend a few extra hours. Sure, it might be challenging at times when we're in a crunch or postproduction and need to get our work done. We try not to do late nights. We have all of our weekends off… Hopefully, in due time, VFX budget increases will allow for more improvements. I am looking forward to the day when we can pay creatives more.” (Source: vulture.com/article/godzilla…)
