CD33 isoforms on the surface of the brain’s microglia can have opposing effects, providing protection or increased susceptibility to Alzheimer’s Disease.
“Everybody considered CD33 a risk, but our study showed it’s not just risk and absence of risk, it’s actually risk and protection,” says Ghazaleh Eskandari-Sedighi, a lead researcher on the study.
