"If you willingly break the law to protect those in power against the law, what makes you think you will have the protection of the law when those in power leave? And they will one day leave, just as surely as the sun rises and sets." – Former presidential candidate Major General (Rtd) Gregory Mugisha Muntu, founder of the Alliance for National Transformation (ANT). THE BEST PRESIDENT UGANDA NEVER HAD.

My thoughts and prayers are with the NMG staff. I called a few friends at NMG today, and all I can say —It is very tough waking up to no job at all, and a lot of uncertainty surrounding what brings food on the table, but most importantly the future of press freedom as a fundamental bedrock of our democracy.

Offences related to "fake news" were killed by the Supreme Court in the Onyango Obbo judgment and the Constitutional Court buried them in the Alternative Digitalk judgment. Prosecuting under void laws is not discretion. It is abuse of process and power. #FreeExpression

The Electoral Commission had a live portal with its disaggregated data at the national tally centre. The portal was shut down as soon as the final results were declared.

I watched the Uganda election from afar. Unwell (sickly), and in a foreign country. I was unable to meaningfully participate for the first time since 2011 when Betty Ndindi, @MauriceMugisha, Kato, Bernard Opwonya (Kabwa) & company thrust me into the world of TV commentary.
But the bold coverage of @DailyMonitor, even in the face of severe State restrictions on their access to the Museveni election team and the adverse actions against their reporters by the legislature, was refreshing. They wrote the first draft of history (as they always describe the work of a journalist) with such clarity, precision, and boldness.
One @ntvuganda reporter stood out to me most for his calm and diction, even when he was in the middle of a teargas wave or bullets flying around him (covering the NUP campaign trail). @DanielKibet_, you did an excellent job.
For those who support independent media (or what is left of it), the @DailyMonitor now has a donate button on its online editions. If you can not subscribe, donate. Every coin counts. Give people like @DanielKibet_ a chance to keep the lights on when the powerful try to keep us all in the dark.
#Uganda had a few hours of full access to the internet. However, access to #socialmedia and messaging platforms has since been blocked since mid-morning (Jan 18). The communications regulator has warned users against bypassing the block by using #VirtualPrivateNetwork (VPN) tools.

The problem with coming up to fight bad governance in Uganda is that many people will look at it as your exclusive responsibility to do so. They’ll then sit aside and start theoretically analysing and criticising your efforts - what you are doing right or not. While they are affected by the same problems you are fighting, it is not their primary duty to do anything about the problems beyond playing like linesmen and disinterested scholars. Even under harsh political environments, they’ll call you weak and mock you for being beaten by a system you should be joining hands to face. That is how even those who try end up quietly withdrawing.
My attitude is to respect, support and encourage those who try to do what I can’t do but that I find necessary to be done. Let everyone add what they can, not just feeling entitled to being saved by another perfect person.

Ugandans under the age of 40 - and that is more than three-quarters of the population - have only known one president.
Yoweri Museveni seized the top job in 1986 following an armed uprising and at the age of 81, he shows no signs of budging. bbc.in/4b0omoF

The challenge of Uganda’s ‘forever president’: Once a beacon of African hope, now keeps in power through ‘mystical arithmetics’.

Comrade @otafiire_k , why did you photoshop me out of our photo? I was standing right next to you, in a boubou, at Kakyeka Stadium.
I stand with you against family power. Uganda is not a kingdom.
