In 1988, the Four Seasons Barrier Reef Resort, considered the world's first luxury floating hotel, opened on Australia's Great Barrier Reef.
The imposing seven-story structure, built in Singapore and towed some 5,000 kilometers to the John Brewer Reef, featured nearly 200 rooms, bars, restaurants, a swimming pool, a floating tennis court, and even a helipad. However, poor logistics, inclement weather, and significant financial setbacks led to the project’s commercial failure just one year after it opened.
After being sold in 1989, the floating complex embarked on a dramatic international odyssey of more than 14,000 kilometers to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, where it operated successfully for nearly a decade under the name Saigon Floating Hotel. As the years passed and hotel competition in the area increased, the property changed hands again in the 1990s, being acquired by the South Korean corporation Hyundai Asan to serve as tourist accommodations in the Mount Kumgang region of North Korea.
Renamed the Haegumgang Hotel, the megastructure remained moored in North Korean waters, welcoming visitors from the South during the period of political détente between the two countries. Following the closure of the tourist zone and the deterioration caused by the building’s neglect, the North Korean government ordered its permanent demolition in recent years, bringing a tragic and curious end to the story of a floating resort that traveled halfway around the world.
