All-time favourites of mine. Such consistent beauty and surprising range. Adding this 1977 Etel Adnan cover:

Do airport/train station announcement sounds factor into this? Your post just made me think about Japanese train station sounds (also the bird-like chirps of Tokyo pedestrian crossings), and airport chimes (like the amazing ’80s one you hear in “Frantic”) youtu.be/W24t07zGIDo?t=19

A Univers 67 Bold Condensed smoking gun: read this Feb @nytimes story where the 1994 FedEx redesign provides irrefutable proof that a Basquiat work is fake (evidence that the artwork’s lawyer owner hilariously dismisses as mere “subject of expert debate”) nytimes.com/2022/02/16/arts/…
Aaron De Groft lost his job as director and chief executive days after the FBI seized 25 works with a contested attribution to the artist. artnews.com/art-news/news/or…

The new national public holiday even has a beautiful graphic identity designed by a new friend of mine here, the ace @TyroneOhia and his inspiring studio Extended Whānau. matariki.net.nz Mānawa maiea te putanga o Matariki!

The Matariki (Pleiades) cluster also happens to be an asterism ⁂, my favourite typographic character, as many of you know. Matariki, or Pleiades, also goes by the name “Subaru” in Japan, if the graphic grouping of stars somehow feels oddly familiar to you.

Mānawatia a Matariki! Today is Matariki, Māori new year, the rise of Pleiades star cluster in Aotearoa winter skies. Finally recognised by the colonial calendar with a national public holiday. A time to visit family, where I noticed the stars in patterned glass at my MIL’s house.

Fun with the @risd_gd Typography 2 class for a book assignment talk with a stack of books we’ve designed. InDesign screen share + overhead cam looking at grids, materials, margins, typefaces, section break ornaments, and slanted hyphens, among other details. Thanks @l_hitchcock!

To wit, my all-time fave version of a fave track: Jacob Miller + the mighty Augustus Pablo, “Baby I Love You So,” with the maestro King Tubby on sound engineering & production. This video has both the original and the devastating dub version on the flip: youtu.be/pJ-B2gn9c60
