this is a perfect demonstration of butler's argument that research abt the supposed "nature" of sex requires cultural presuppositions about sex to frame the inquiry. this graph is nonsensical and circular bc "brain sex" is measured by an index that predefines the outcome

Something that I am finding somewhat tiresome is “discoveries” like this
Two individually marked bumble bees are shown in a tunnel used for affective contagion experiments.
Bees that briefly interacted with conspecifics in a positive affective state in this tunnel later showed more optimistic responses to ambiguous flowers.
The discovery shows that even insects can share affective states, tracing the roots of affect and social cognition deep into evolution.

very good essay from @writingenjoyer diagnosing what the hell is going on on BookTok
“Yes, the Brontës’ implied reader was educated, English and at least bourgeois, but the BookToker’s implied reader is exclusionary, too,” writes @writingenjoyer.“The reader whose affective register is foreign to the book’s finds nothing in it.”

Gerald Murnane makes a provocative distinction between "film-script fiction" and "meditative" or "true fiction" in his essay "In Praise of the Long Sentence" – he uses a paragraph from Raymond Carver as an example of the former and Mavis Gallant as an example of the latter

i would like to remind everyone that Sentient Media published a collection of essays by Indigenous vegans in 2023, and they make 99% of the "discourse" on here redundant. Take a break from posting and read something for once.
