#Blog: From public health pioneer to civic AI: Liverpool City Region’s next global opportunity
"Nearly 180 years ago, Liverpool pioneered a civic response to industrial change.
"Today, the City Region can apply the same principles: to build AI that improves lives and shares prosperity more widely, writes Professor Iain Buchan, W.H. Duncan Professor of Public Health Systems and Director of Civic Health Innovation Labs, at University of Liverpool."
In our latest Substack post he continues:
"Liverpool has been here before…
"In the 1840s, Liverpool was Britain’s fastest-growing town, yet many people lived in overcrowded cellars and endured desperately poor health.
"Dr William Henry Duncan walked the streets, counted sickness and death, and mapped disease against living conditions. His evidence helped bring about the Liverpool Sanitary Act of 1846, which made the council responsible for public health and created a civic team spanning medicine, engineering and law.
"Liverpool’s breakthrough came from joining evidence, professional capability and accountable action around the needs of a place. That model is newly relevant as artificial intelligence reshapes work, public services and the global economy."

It's four years since Liverpool led the world’s first voluntary mass testing for #Covid19.
We've produced a short film with @profbuchan exploring the city’s response, and how we can use data-driven community testing in future pandemics:

As Omicron spread and isolated/quarantined hospital staff levels posed care risks, we showed marginal benefit from dual lateral flow testing to accelerate safe return to work, and we saw viable virus in 19.4% beyond the CDC 5-day threshold for safe return: link.springer.com/article/10…
