Career Advice Reminder | Why Review? There is an art to the book review, and there is a craft to it, a form—potent, reliable and durable—that takes practice and patience to master. By Douglas Dowland: bit.ly/4cI8vKj

As someone in the midst of writing a book review, I appreciate the recognition of the necessity of this labor and the attention to the genre’s form(s). There is more to a scholarly book review than summary—it reveals and accounts for field orientation in important ways.
The academic book review is both a craft and an insight into the life of the mind. My thoughts on this genre in today’s Inside Higher Ed. insidehighered.com/opinion/c…

I have never read Stoner by John Williams, but other writers post about it so much that sometimes I feel like I have. After seeing another wave of these posts I decided to try writing the first chapter of the book I imagine whenever I read one of them.

I think we need to discuss theoreticism more than we do -- the assumption that if you just get the theory -- the concepts -- right, then you will automatically get the politics right too. This is from my new ALH essay:

Politicians use a lot of words when campaigning, but the most meaningful are very simple. Douglas Dowland, associate professor of English at @ohionorthern, discusses these. bit.ly/DDowlandAM
