In a shock development, party which has racist policies, makes racist statements, turns out to be .. er … full of racists. And misogynists. Who’d have guessed.
Anyone know if (how many?) freeholds the Crown has granted itself specifically to become registered proprietor? Not including those titles held by the Crown for others reasons but specifically under s.79 LRA 2002
The only surprise to hardworking admin & academic staff at Cambridge is that it has clung to 4th place. The decline is the result of at least 5 years of governance failure and mismanagement at the highest levels, of which the recent issues are only the latest in a long list.
BBC 6:00 news headline just read out.
“Road closed in Norwich while new road bridge is lifted in place.
Find out later why this road is being closed”.

Lord Briggs it is then. Good news for those of us who think private law is about practical solutions to practical problems. Current favourite Briggs quote, in dismissing a submission: “more of a lawyerish fancy than a real solution.”

His Majesty The King has approved the appointment of Lord Briggs of Westbourne as the next President of the Supreme Court. The King made the appointment on the advice of the Prime Minister and Lord Chancellor, following the recommendation of an independent selection commission. Lord Briggs will take up his new role in January 2027, when the current President, Lord Reed, retires. Lord Briggs will be the Court's fifth President since it was established in 2009.
Speaking upon the announcement of his appointment, Lord Briggs said:
“It is a great privilege to be appointed President of the Supreme Court and to serve the public by upholding the rule of law. I look forward to working with colleagues across the Supreme Court and the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council (JCPC) to deliver justice of the highest quality, transparency and accessibility.”
The current President, Lord Reed of Allermuir, welcomed Lord Briggs’ appointment:
"I am very pleased that Lord Briggs has been appointed to be the next President of the Supreme Court. He is a judge of the highest distinction, with previous experience of judicial leadership. He has also demonstrated his commitment to increasing the accessibility and efficiency of the Justice system, both in domestic cases and in those heard by the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council. I wish him well in his new role."

The Cambridge University press statements are shockingly passive, as if they were mere bystanders. If you want to stand by staff don’t accept their resignation, don’t launch an inquiry. But if you do, own that. Currently looking like you want to be all things to all people….
The overwhelming majority of my colleagues in academia are hard working in the pursuit of knowledge and education in its many forms. They do not support plagiarism, racists, dishonesty, malevolence, extremism or performance protests. They do a great job. Please don’t forget

I personally don’t think Gary Speed was selfish, or Graham Thorpe, or Ricky Hatton, or David Bairstow, or David Kelly, or Justin Fashanu, or Chester Bennington, or Chris Cornell, or the 6,190 people who died by suicide in the UK in 2024.
