'Sometime before 1585 in Bologna, Italy the woman on the cover of this book sat for a portrait... The legality of African enslavability had circulated around the Mediterranean for almost 150 years. Art historians don’t know who this woman is. They can’t.'

I loved the way @kcarterjackson writes #ForceandFreedom- it’s such a compelling history text that weaves narratives together as an actual story @raceandvisual

the title: i wanted to convey the way mediation is always involved in conveying immediacy. also wanted to think about this very impulse as the residue of the documentary impulse after the critical/deconstructive turn in documentary studies and practice
